Ths loss la estimated at $10,000, as follows: New I. O. O. F. building, 16,000, In surance $1500; J. L. Weave grocery store, damage to stock $2000, covered by Insurance: old I. O. O. V. building, $1000, Insured; Patterson's livery barn and dwelling, $500, no Insurance; Kutschkas' shoe and second-hand tore, $600. Insured. Practically everything was carried 4ut of all buildings and Is in the street this morning, with no place to which to move It. Heroic efforts were made by the volunteer fire brigade to save the new I. O. O. t building, but the Hames could not be checked. Only one stream of water was available on account of the distance from the, hydrants. The cause of the fire is unknown. New Road Begins Construction Work Portland It Oregon City Lint Kas All But Mils of Bight of Way to Viola, la Clackamas County. Right of way from the city limits of Portland to Viola, In Clackamas coun ty, except a short stretch of a mile, has been secured by the Portland & Oregon City Railroad company and construction began early this week ac cording to President Stephen Carver today. "We have a small crew of men work ing near Clackamas station now and will add to this soon," he said. "With in four months we expect to have 10 miles of line finished and ready for operation between Clackamas and Htone, our first townslte-. "We have secured virtually all our right of way to Viola save a small strip that probably will have to bo condemned. In securing this we found llttls or no opposition. In fact, many of the ranchers, recognizing the ad vantages of a new line, gave us right of way." Viola is approximately 25 miles from Portland. The proposed route of tho electric road, which will be broad gauge, runs from the North Bank depot, down Flanders to Fourth, up Fourth to Madison, across the Madison street brtdg. through Sell wood. Mil waukie, Clackamas, Stone, Logan to Viola, the terminus. ' The Oregon City branch of the line will Join the main road near Clackamas. The proposed route would extend In to a rich portion of Clackamas county, midway between the proposed Clacka mas Southern and the P. R., L. & P. company's Casadero line. At the present time the company's entrance Into Portland is blocked by a referendum Invoked against the fran chise granted last year by the city and the matter is now being fought out in the courts. Myers was made member of I - the state central committee for Mult nomah county. The Republican committeemen chose O. A, Neal temporary chairman by a; vote of 110 to 45 for John L. Day. David N. To Attend Bankers' Annual Meetings The annual meetings of the bankers' associations of three states will be visited by A. L. Tucker, cashier of the , Lumbermen National bank, who Is planning to start In a short time on an extensive investigative tour of the three northwestern states. Ths Washington meeting at Walla1 Walla Will be attended June 4, 6, and . Then a delegation from the two states ' will go by special car to Twin Falls. 1 Idaho, to attend the convention of la ho bankers. Then a number of the tarty.
