SUDDEN SHOWING WEAKNESS IN LULL IS SHOWN IN THE MARKET FOR POTATOES HERE THE BUSINESS OUTLOOK By Flyman California and the east continue to Invade this territory for supplies of the coming crop of Koyal Ann cher ries. The latest California firm to enter this market Is Oe Long Syrup company. Its president, H. C. Ixms, has been induced by D. H. Gibson, a local broker, after two years' effort. to come into the Pacific northwest for a, large share of its cherry needs. Mr. Long was reported today at Walla Walla, where he was making ton effort to secure stocks. He pur chased practically everything that was available at Hood Kiver and Tne Dalles; his purchases to date amount ing to perhaps 310 tons tor his supplies he paid $30 a ton or 110 a ton more than northwest growers have ever before received up to this season The firm is" said to use about 700 tons of cherries each season and It is quite probable that in future years the bulk or the lief prevails that the future outlook for the shipping trade is not so good, but this is merely a guess for none are In a position to state definitely what will happen. FIRST GREEN CORN IS HERE First shipment of green corn for the season arrived today, from the south and was received by Levy & Spiegl. The shipment consisted ot one barrel and was in excellent condition. Sale was made to the Portland Market at $1.25 per dozen. PLENTY OP SALMON ARRIVING "While the catch of salmon in the Co lumbia and Willamette is only fair and canners are grabbing everything in sight, quite fair supplies are coming from southern Oregon to the wholesale trade. STRAWBERRIES TAKE A DROP Lower prices were generally named for strawberries in the local trade to day. Receipts from home points were more liberal and of good quality with sales of best generally at $2.50 a crate with some down to $2.25. This was for old style hallocka. Pints sold on the street at 75c to $2.50 a crate according to quality. LINSEED OIL IS LOWER AGAIN A "cut of 2c a gallon in the price of linseed oil was announced this morn ing by the Portland Linseed Oil works. The new price for boiled is: Barrels, 63c; cases, 68c per gallon. ASPARAGUS PRICES ARE DOWN Further reduction In the price of asparagus was shown In the local mar ket today with more liberal receipts from local pointr. as well as from Wal la Walla and California, Local selling at 90c to $1 a dozen.. LOSING MONEY IN LETTUCE Heavy losses are being sustained by local wholesalers in California head lettuce and sales are being made today at about 50e a crate less than cost with some quoting down to $1.25. Local coming in better shape. SUGAR IS UP NICKEL TODAY While the extent of the advance was only 6c. the rise in the price of re fined sugar today along the coast has been generally expected as a result of the great strength In the east recently. HOPS ARE REPORTED AS DULL While the sale of 118 hales of hops In the St. Paul section to Joseph Har ris of Salem was reported at 15c a pound, the general market is very quiet. The Hellers were McKay A Ralney. Contracts are stagnant. Cheese Market Cut Cent and Half Here Sharpest Reduction of Season to Daje Occurs With Increased Make at Tillamook. The sharpest price loss of the sea son is showing in the cheese market with a cut of lMo a pound by the Tillamook association during the laat zi hours. The price of flats la now quoted In ine wnoiesaie marKet at lecglbMic a pound, with Young Americas at 17 17 ' ic. According to last advices from Til lamook and Coos Bay the output of encese is snowing a tremendous in crease. The height of the season a production Is expected to be reached at an earlv date. coos Bay islhe bearish factor in the 4rade at present. It is stated that its product is controlled hy a Seattle interest who is able to sell only when cutting below the Tillamook price. This is considered detrimental to the industry of the Coos Bay section. In former years the Coos Bay product has been selling at practically the same price as that from Tillamook. The trade generally is not stocking up with supplies because of expecta tions ol sun lower values. Chicago Wheat Very- Strong at the Close Chicago, May 14. Wheat Options turned strong after the opening with a closing advance of to a bushel. There was considerable selling pres sure at the start, but this soon disap peared with short covering. Broomhall cabled from Liverpool that the steadier American cables yes terday stimulated some covering here and speculative support. American new winter offers were firmer, and this was attributed to less favorable crop acH'ices as privately reported. Later there was some reaction, and prices suffered a small decline, with easier feeling in corn and a generally reduced Inquiry for both cargoes and parcels with Russian offers freer. At 1:30 p. m. the undertone was steady, with firmer La Plata offers and an im proved demand for spot. Some rather heavy supplies of hogs are expected in the local yards within the next month and for that reason the market here is very likely to show some extensive fluctuations during that time. At Chicago there was a better feel ing in the hog trade for the day and values were up a nickel. A similar advance was shown at Kansas City with the market firm. After a miserable, hot, sultry after noon Portland just couldn't help hav ing a thunderstorm last night. It was inevitable despite the fact that Oregon is not supposed to have very much 1 thunder and lightning. The storm came about 7 o'clock. A little rain and then a lot of it. A mighty clap ot thunder and a series of deep, awful booms sounding like 13 inch guns trained on Vera Cruz. Roars and rumbles reverberating from Council Crest, running like mad over the city and, crashing against Mount Hood. And the lightning! A gigantic arc of white light and snaps! and cracks! like all the ringmaster's whips In the world rolled into one. It was some etorm all right and easterners were homesick and China men became frightened. Even Weath er Forecaster Beals said it was the worst storm in years. The lightning struck a pole belong ing to the Northwestern Electric com pany at Failing and Commercial streets, splitting it, like a sausage, while Mrs. H. A. Taylor of 1400 Delaware avenue reports a miraculous escape. There, with the Taylor family In a back room a bolt ran down a couple of discon nected telephone wires strung on the porch within three feet of the daugh ter of tile house, burning the wall and igniting a basket that happened to be in its path. The heavy downpour of water for a time flooded the streets, clogged catch basins and washed out lawns and flower beds. During the storm the lightning split two trees In Laurelhurst Park at Eu&t Thirty-ninth and Stark streets. The trunks were sundered clear to ground. the Vancouver Likes Market Idea Vancouver, Wash., May 14. A com mittee of Vancouver business men is looking up Information on public mar kets and it is more than probable thai one will be established here within a short time. Reports received from the Alblna market In Portland, which is being liberally patronized by Clarke county farmers, bring information that the market is a big success and steps will be taken to organize the Vancouver markets on a similar basis. It is planned to use Fifth street from Main to Reserve and at present only one market day each week is be ing advocated. Should the amount of business transacted warrant the mar ket will be held on two days or even cftener. NORTHWEST BANK STATEMENT Portland Banks. Clearings This week. Tear syo. SECURITY SAVINGS & TRUST COMPANY Fifth and Morrison Streets Capital and Surplus $1,400,000 m PAGET IS SUGGESTED FOR STATE TREASURER ...-"MSV" :,; : jt.r. .. B. Lee Paget. Spontaneously within the past S4 hours a movement has arisen In the Democratic party to write In the name of B. Lee Paget of Portland on the primary ballot for the position of state treasurer. At the present time Thomas B. Kay, candidate to succeed himself on the Republican ticket. Is th only candidate for t he office on the pri mary ballot. Mr. Paget, however, 's nominated for the position of utate treasurer by the Prohibition state convention held in Portland last week. The Progressives, too, are Inclined to write In Mr. Paget's name as they have no candidate for the office and so Mr. Paget is In a fair way to receive the nomination from three parties, making him a triple nominee for the position. The idea to write in Paget's name comes at the suggestion of a number of Democrats and Progressives who do not desire to see the oflce of state treasurer go to the Republican party by default and a concerted move will be made to put Mr. Paget's name on the Democratic and Progressive ballots. Mr. Paget has lived In Portland for the past 25 years, is well known and stands high In the counsels of the Prohibition party. He Is said to be well qualified for the position of state treasurer, having had 12 years experience in practical accounting and 10 years as a bank officer. He has never held public office but Is con sidered one of the strongest cam paigners in the state.
