ty may know something of the men
who aspire to represent them in both
houses of the next legislature The
Jrjurnal herewith presents short
sketches of all the candidates for the
state renate and house of representa
tive whose narr.es appear on the offi
cial primary bnllots.
The Itppubliran, Democratic and
Progressive parties are all represent
ed arid the voters of these parties will
be railed upon to make nominations
from thene names.
In the Republican ranks a nominee
must be selected for state senator
from the Thirteenth district and from
the Fourteenth district, which com
prises Multnomah, Clackamas and Co
lumbia counties. The Democrats and
Progressives have no candidates for
state senator.
The Republicans alone have candi
dates for nomination In thff Seven
teenth representative district, embrac
ing both Multnomah and Clackamas
counties. Ia the Klghteenth district
Republicans must select 12 nominees
from a field of 34, while the Demo
crats have but four to vote for, and
the Progressives onty three.

J. P. AI5ROTT Republican. Candi
date for the Republican nomination
for the state senate from the Thir
teenth senatorial district. Vice presi
dent of the printing firm of James,
Kerns & Abbott. A native of Oregon
and has lived in Portland for the past
y years. He is 38 years old and rep
resented Multnomah county in the
1911 and 1913 legislatures, where he
was Identified witli the Republican
machine. State Printer R. A. Harris
charges that a 1)111 introduced by Ab
bott in the session of 1913 contained a
Joker which would have increased
greatly the cost of state printing and
would have added correspondingly to
the profits of the then state printer
the late Willis Duniway, who was at
one time a partner of Abbott's in the
printing business.
ARTHUR LA NOOUTH Republican.
Candidate for the Republican nomina
tion for the state senate from the
Thirteenth senatorial district. He is
41 years of ase, a graduate of the Uni
versity of Michigan law school and
haB lived in Portland since 1903. He
Is a charter member of the county
bar association and served as its sec
retary for five terms. He was presi
dent for one term. He is a taxpayer.
Has never held public ' office. Mr.
Langguth advocates "easier taxation,

He Is engaged in the insurance busi
ness and In manufacturing. He repre
sented Multnomah county in the 1909
and 1911 legislatures, where he was
Instrumental In getting through the
assembly the present insurance code.
Is Interested In the good roads move
ment, being president of the Portland

leader in getting school legislation
through the house and took prominent
part in the Jefferson street levee act.
As a late appointee to the Interstate
bridge committee was responsible for
the change of the enabling act for the
Oregon-Washington "bridge making the
fact general in scope instead of apply
ing solely to Multnomah county. His
bill was copied at Olympia for the
Washington enabling act. Important
in work of the Emanuel charity board
now building a hospital in this city.

L. BERNARD BARDE Republican.
Secretary-treasurer of M. Barde &
Sons, junk dealers. He has been iden
tified with the firm for eight years.
Pays taxes through his firm. He is
only 25 years old and has no particu
lar qualifications for the office. lias
never taken any part in public af
fairs. The firm of M. Barde & Sons
has been in the municipal court a num
ber of times as a defendant.
LLOYD BATES Republican. About
28 years of age, born and raised in
Portland.- Is manager of the Bates
Sand & Gravel company and is also
engaged in banking and laundry busi
ness. Is the son of George W. Bates,
local banker. Graduate of Amherst
college, married and a taxpayer. Well
and favorably known, especially
among the younger business men. An
advocate of good roads and of quar
terly payment of taxes.
JOSEPH W BEVERIDGE Repub
lican. He is 52 years of age and has
resided in Portland -for 30 years. He
is vice president of Bushong & Co.,
printers, through which he is a tax
payer, being a stockholder. He is a
practical printer, having worked his
way up from the bottom. He served
In the 1907 legislature, securing the
passage of a free textbook bill through
the house at that time. He is a native
of California.
R. M. BURLEY Republican. Pres
ident of the Multnomah Abstract com
pany of Portland. He is 29 years old
and has lived In Oregon five years.
For four years he was connected with
bond and farm loan department of the
state auditor's office of North Da
kota; believes that this experience will
stand him in good stead in legislature.
Pays taxes in Multnomah, Klamath,
Coos, Gilliam and Yamhill counties.
Stands 'principally for economy and
reduction of taxes.
SAMUEL B. COBB Republican. Is
54 years of age and a native of Maine.
He has lived in Portland 32 years or
since 1S82., 12 years of this time being
spent in the carpentry and contract
ing business. He is at present secre
tary of the Standard Box & Lumber
company. , Wasa member of the 1903
legislature and served for two months
on the executive board of Mayor
George H. Williams. Is married and a
taxpayer.
E. H. DEER Y Republican. Born in
County Donegal, Ireland, In 1873. Has
resided in Portland since 1892 and
for the past 13 years has run a meat
market at 462 Jefferson street. H
has never held office save on election
boards. Advocates less taxes, fewer
laws, mpre common sense.
H. A. DARNALL Republican.
Never in politics before. Publisher
of the Mt. Scott Herald and the Pa
cific Grange Bulletin. He is 46 years
old and came west from Kansas in
1899. Taught school for 15 years In
the states of Kansas, Oregon and
Washington. Has lived in Lents since
1904. Has been closely identified
with the grange movement, serving
as state lecturer for four years. He
has been a prime mover in the pub
lic market movement in Multnomah
county and Is interested in civic im
provement. He advocates "Conserva
tive legislation, economy in taxation."
FREDERICK M. DeNEFFE Re
publican. Born in Iowa. He spent
the early part of his boyhood days on
a farm in the state of Washington.
Came to Portland in 1901, where he
was employed by the Hazelwood com
pany. In 1902 he entered the Uni
versity of Michigan at Ann Arbor,
and graduated from the law depart
ment in 1906. Returned to Oregon and
was admitted to the bar in 1907. After
practicing law In Eugene for two
years, he moved to Portland where he
has since been practicing his profes
sion as a member of the law firm of
Conley & DeNeffe. Was chief clerk
of the senate committee on railroads
in the legislative session of 1907, and
in 1909 he was chief clerk of the sen
ate jndlciary committee, in the Oregon
legislature. Pays taxes in Multnomah,
Marion, Wasco, Harney, Lake and
Klamath counties. Advocates semi
annual payment of taxes without pen
alty, and a reasonable discount for
payment in fulto before April 1; laws
for the protection of women and chil
dren and laborers; rigid economy in
appropriations, without retarding the
development of the state; enactment
of laws that will tend to develop the
natural resources of the state; aboli
tion of useless state commissions and

been practicing law in Portland for

JOHN GILL Republican. Born in
England. Came to Massachusetts
when three years Old. Educated in
public schools of Worcester In that
state. Followed printers' trade until
1876, when he came to Portland. In
1879 established with his brother the
book house of J. K. Gill and company.
In early '80's prominent member of
committee which secured for Oregon
the. Australian system of balloting.
In 1892 member of Independent com
mittee which worked for the conaoli-

born in Washington county in 1873.

state, and taught school himself for
five years. Studied law under Harri
son Allen' and Judge T. J. Cleeton, at
St. Helens, Or., and served as deputy
district attorney of Columbia county
for four years under T. J. Cleeton, and
also under Harrison Allen. Admitted

and raised in Multnomah county and
has held positions with a number of
public service companies, including the
Albina Light & Water company, mc
Western Union Telegraph company,
Portland Railway, Light- and Power
company, as well as the General Elec
tric company. He organized the Port
land Messenger company in 1894, the
pioneer messenger company of the
city. Is 39 years old and pays taxes.
Advocates principally good roads,
economy in public affairs, abolition of
useless commissions and the semi-annual

WILSON T. HUME Republican.
Born in California in 1859; educated
and raised In that Btate. Came to Ore
gon in 1880. Was stenographer for
Bruno, Dolph & Simon until 1884, when
admitted to the bar. Became law
partner with J. Finley Watson, lormer
district attorney, and E. B. Watson,
member of the supreme court. In 1888
elected to the legislature from Multno
mah county, serving in the session of
1889. In 1890 made deputy district at
Mem
ber of the 1909 legislature and up to
June, 1913, was register of t.ie United
States land office at Lakeview, Or.
Born at Moline, Mich., in 1874. Servud
in the Spanish-American war in Cuba
and saw two years' service in tha
Philippines. He studied law at the
University of Oregon, being admitted
to the bar in 1909. He has practiced
his profession in this city since 1913.
His elogan reads, "Keep the taxes
down. More land on tax rolls. More
people on land."
JOSEPH G. RICHARDSON Repub
lican. Born at Minneapolis. Is 28
years of age and has lived in Oregon
since 1S93, residing in Salem until
1898, when he came to Portland, where
4S years of age and has lived In Ore
gon nine years. Is a plasterer by
trade and stands high In labor circles.
Has received the indorsement of the
etate federation of labor for the legis
lature. Is running on a broad plat
form and states that he has made
pledges to none, other than to be
"Straight, fair and honest." Is mar
ried and has a family.
ROBERT C. WRIGHT Republican.
Born Rome, N. Y., 1860. Educated In
public schools of Chicago. After leav
ing high chool traveled in Europe on
his own resources. Is versed in Ger
man, French and Italian. Has made
his own living since leaving school. Is
married and has been a resident of
Portland since 1888. . Graduate of Ore
gon university and has practiced law
here since. 1890. Taxpayer and long
time student of public affairs. Has
never held office but desires to go to
legislature as such student. He advo
cates fixing of the responsibility for
correct drafting of laws, cutting off
of tax burdens wherever possible and
halt in' making laws unless absolutely
needed for the general good, and time
limit for the introduction of bills in
the legislature, after which no bills
can be introduced without a seven
eighths vote of the body.
B. E. YOUMANNS Republican.
Born on a farm in Wisconsin, where
he lived until 21 years of age. Ha
taught school in that state four years
and studied in the high and normal
schools of the state. He came to Ore
son In the fall of 1902, entering the
law department of the University of
Oregon, graduating and being ad
mitted to the bar in 1904. He has
never tried for political office before.
He pays taxes In several counties of
the state. He farvors less legislation,
fewer commissions, constructive busi
ness economy, legislation for workers,
semi-annual payment of taxes and
$1500 tax exemption.

T. O. HAGUE Democrat. Has been
in the importing and export business
for nearly 40 years, the past eight In
Portland and previous to that in New
l ork city. He has never run for or
held office in Oregon before. He has
always been prominently identified
with the Democratic party and ran fot

A. K. HIGGS Democrat. Portland
physician. He has lived in Oregon for
15 years, the past six -in Portland, and
previous to his residence here was in
Heppner and Morrow county. He was

although the county Is nominally Re
publican. He advocates lower taxes
and easier payment of' taxes. He ls a
native of Texas.
ALVA L. M' DONALD Democrat.
Editor and owner of the Angora Jour
nal, a paper devoted to Angora goats
and mohair growing. Secretary of the
Northwest Angora Goat association. He
is a native of Kansas, was educated
in Iowa, and was formerly a newspaper
reporter on eastern payers. Followed
the sea for 12 years in ord-.fr to seethe
world, served in the Boer war and set
tled in Portland in 1908. Advocates
the reclamation of Portland's water

ing by the practice of medicine. 8he
is a graduate of the Hahnemann Medi
cal college of Chicago. Dr. Talbott
runs on a platform of greater economy.
Her slogan is "Pure politics."

WILBER HENDERSON Progres
sive. Twenty-eight years old. Born
in Vermillion county, Illinois, Joe Can
non's natal county. Educated at col
lege la Colorado, University of Wash
ington and Oregon Law school. He has
resided In Oregon four years. Taught
school In Indiana two years. He has
lived In west for the past eight years.
Mr. Henderson was a straight Repub
payable quarterly; eight hours day's
labor for men and women.
MRS. M. L. T. HIDDEN Progres
sive. Mrs. Hidden ls a pioneer suf
frage and temperance worker and has
been active in politics since women
got the vote in Oregon. She ran on the
Progressive ticket for councilman at
large In 1913, and was an unsuccessful
candidate for city commissioner last
June. Before coming to Portland sev
eral years ago she lived at Vancouver,
Washington, where she was a member

S. B. HUSTON Republican. 56 years
of age, native of Indiana; educated in
Indiana and Illinois. Spent three years
in Old and New Mexico. Came to Ore
gon in 1883. residing in Hillsboro un
til 1906, when he came to Portland,
Where he has resided since. Is a law
yer by profession, starting to practice
in this state in 1884. Was mayor,
councilman and school director of
HUlsboro, serving the last capacity for
12 years. Member of the state senate
from Washington county one term,
from 1892 until 1896. Formerly a
Democrat, now a Republican. He was
a strong upholder of the assembly four
years ago, and is regarded as a reac
tionary in politics. Taxpayer.
B. F. JONES Republican. Native
of Wisconsin. Graduate of the Uni
versity of Wisconsin. Forty-four vears
old. Has resided In Oregon since 1883. j
In the drug business in Portland since
1890. Now manager of the Joyce
pharmacy. Forty-fifth and Belmont
streets. Married and has three chil
dren. Taxpayer. Formerly ran drug
store at Tenth and Stark streets. Is
treasurer of the State Drug associa
tion. Has never run for office before
although active in politics.
H. C. KORNEGAY Republican. A
young lawyer who has been in Port
land since 1904. He practiced in Balti
more, Md., before coming to this city
and studied law in Washington, D. C.
Is running on a platform of tax reform
and greater economy in the state gov
ernment. Has never held office. Is

LOUIS KUEHN Republican. Came
to Portland as a boy 30 years ago and

land seven years ago from Michigan.
Lawyer by profession. Was prominent
In local politics in Michigan. Post
master at Ithaca under President Mc
Kinley. Also mayor and served two
terms as district attorney. Pays taxes
in Douglas and Crook counties. Quali
fications for office extremely dubious.

D. C. LEWIS Republican. Past 50
years of age. Lawyer by profession
but now in business. Has lived in Ore
gon eight years. Was connected with
the OregoB Electric for three years
buying their right of way. Was in
Crook county before coming , to St
Johns where he now resides. Formerly
a prosecuting attorney in Pratt coun
ty, Kansas. Also special prosecutor
appointed by the attorney general of
that state to clean up western part of

Multnomah county; worker for the
direct primary. At the present time
member of the dock commission.
ANDREW C. SMITH Republican.
Physician. Born in Wisconsin in
1856; came to Oregon in 1863. Has
been a resident of Portland ever since
except when away studying medicine
in San Francisco, New York and Vien
na. WTas a member1 of the state sen
ate in 1901 and 1903 sessions. Mem
ber of the state board of health since
its creation, being its president three
times. Has been president of the Hi
bernian bank for 20 years. Is a form
er vice president of the American
Medical association; eX-president of
the Oregon State Medljcal society and
is the present president of the North
Pacific Surgical association, a Boclety
embracing the states of Oregon,
Washington and Idaho and British
Columbia. In 1910, when the Repub
lican party in Oregon was divided
on the "assembly" issue. Dr. Smith
vacillated until the last moment, but
finally became a candidate for the
assembly nomination for governor. He
was supported , by the Oregonian, but
was defeated by Bowerman. Heavy
taxpayer.
E. E, SOUTHARD Republican.
Forty-four years of age. Born in Al
legan county, Michigan, removing to
Nebraska in 1873 and receiving his
education in the public schools of that
state. He also studied at Western
Normal college, Shenandoah, Iowa
Taught school, learned printing busi
ntss and later edited paper at Gree
ley, Neb. Has lived in Oregon 12
years, nine years in Portland. Is a
practical printer and at present a
linotype operator on The Journal.
Pays taxes, is married and has two
children. Has been indorsed for the
legislature by the State Federation of
Labor.
PLOWDEN STOTT Republican.
Bom Portland July 28, 1883. Conies
cf old and well known Portland family.
Was educated in Portland public
schools and admitted to the bar in
1907. Is prominent in ' Multnomah
Athletic club circles. He is e law
partner of Frank T. Collier and serves
as attorney for the state pharmacy
board.

lican. Is 41 years of age and a native
of Bay City, Mich. Has lived in Port
land for the past 12 years and Is vice
president of the Portland Lumber com
pany. Is married and a taxpayer. Has
never sought office before. Business
reputation high. Advocates lower
taxes.
