ONIONS DISCOVERED GR01RS HANDS This I Httid to Not Be Offering at Present While Previous Car Sold at $4 in the Country; Famine - Is About to Arrive in This line. THE BUSINESS OUTLOOK By Hyman H. Cohen Today's Produce Trad. 4. Kggs hold steady. Chic kens are higher. Cheese price steady. Country meatH steady. One tar onions remains. w 4 Potato market sick. Foreign oniona high. Best asparagus higher. Hlpe toinatoea scarce. Bo far as can be ascertained there la only one carload lot of onions re maining In the hands of an Oregon producer, and thla la not said to be offering Just at the moment. The last aaU: of a cur lot of onions was report ed in the country at $4 a cental f. o. b. -whipping Htation. There are a few small lots of oniona ..... iAin.. tn.uniri in farmers' hands. but verv few of them. These are being v..i,i tn aotno inatinccfi for more than 4c a pound In the country, with an ad ditional express rate, because there s tint amnicti In Mnd bv freight. The onion famine forecast In these reports some time ago Bureiy com- .. .J It. arrival will ha delayed bllt little longer. A few shipments of A Hawaiian onions have been received on the coast, but there is not sufficient to help the demand materially. . . The foreign stock is quoted at such high values ubroad that recent arrivals nf Hawaii onions here have sold to re tailers as high as $4 a crate. These rutin .are Himooned to contain 60 pounds of onions, but few of them ac lually ari or inut wtigui ucn mjr rlvn In this city. Hest Oregon onions are being held firmer by Jobbers at $4.25 a cental, and it is likely that as high as $5 will be obtained before the present supply la exhausted. CAULIFLOWER PRICES DOWN There Is a somewhat better supply of cauliflower offering from the home section, and the market is not receiv ing its requirements. The pfsice Is be ing gradually reduced as supplies In crease. Hales today at 85c$l.u0 a dozen. RIPE BANANAS ARE ARRIVING The trainload of bananas which ar rived this morning was in fairly ripe condition, with the. quality generally excellent. The trade has been demand ing ripe fruit, but little was available recently. SOME LETTUCE 19 HIGHER Extra fancy head lettuce Is being quoted firm and higher at $2.75 a crate along Front street The best stock Is bringing this price .generally, but some off quality is selling at vari ous figures. Some Is very poor. REST GRASS QUOTED HIGHER "While ths market is weak enough for . ordinary to poor asparagus, trade Is showing more .strength for best qual ity; In fact some are today quoting an advance of lc a pound. This Is due to the fact that the canneries are bidding up in the south. ARTICHOKES SELLING LOWER With much greater supplies of French, artichokes from the south, the nrtce here has shown a very heavy decline recently. Values are ruling today down to 75c a dozen for best of ferings, with some selling for less. i STEELUEAD , SALMON COMING Steelhead -salmon Is again coming to thr. local market, and is quoted at 12c a pound. The, receipts are from an Oregon point. Chlnooks are scarce, and the price -is being held firm at 15 4(1 6c a pound' Halibut trade Is steady. SHIPPERS' WEATIER NOTICE It Is stated generally that whenever the railroads are showing severe loss es In revenues, general business conditions are not at all healthy. Just at present the earnings statements be ing issued by various railroads of the United States are far from indicating a return of business prosperity. On every - side both net and gross de crease is shown in earnings as com pared with similar periods even a year ago. At that time the outlook was scarcely one that could be bragged about. Canadian roads are showing exactly the same falling off in revenues as are the American roads; in fact, during the last few months the northern business has beersomewhat less favorable than the southern. As the business is com pared with the same week of a year ago, weather conditions are therefore considered no especial factor. Some of the latest statements of the railroads show: Lehigh Valley, February,; net de crease. $596,131. ! Missouri, Kansas & Texas, third week March, decreased $70,372; from July 1, decreased, $484,112. St. Louis & Southwestern, third week March, decrease $12,000; from July 1, decreased. $252,632. Texas & Pacific, third week March, decreased $6732; from July 1, increased X3K7 947-. Colorado & Southern, February, gross decrease. $206,610; net decrease, $133,- rfhoaanonicA A- Ohio, third week March. Increased $69,649. ; ttrv.inn phma rv eross decrease, $1,162,264; net decrease, $595,717; eight months' gross decrease, $5,641,819; net decrease. $2,802,597. HOG PRICE IS STEADY AFTER TOBOGGANING; TOPS ARE UNCHANGED North Portland Market Moves Small Run Quickly at Y ester day's Average for Tops; Cattle Situation Is Far From Healthy. WHEAT PRICES ARE BOOMING WITH BUT VERY LITTLE UNSOLD Cleanups of Country Elevators Show Little of Cereal to Be Had; Some Freely Bidding 82 H Cents for Club Wheat Here. Chickens Reaching Record Price Here The price of chickens Is reaching for record values along Front street. Sales were reported general today at 18 isi,4f for- livi hens. It was stated that as high as 19c had been obtained, but this could not be confirmed. . The price of chickens today Is scarcely a consideration. Receipts are so limited that receivers are besieged by buyers and during recent days there lias been a constant "waiting list" of poultry buyers whose wants could not be supplied. Therefore ev erything that came forward had sev eral buyers willing to fight for it. Once in a while It was stated that receivers "held up" their customers owing to the scarcity, but most of the dealers along the street contend that the present value Is a full one and therefore the country should not ex pect more. By advancing the price still higher no greater supplies can be brought forward, and only the con sumer Is the sufferer. San Francisco Produce Market. San Francisco, March 26. Today's Hog1 Market. Tops. Potato Outlet Is Fast Being Closed The outlet for potatoes is contract ing vand at this time only the very best quality offerings are finding any call at all and these must be sortea more carefully than during any recent year. California . is again buying a rew carloads of potatoes here, but the best price available is 40c a cental f. o. b. for extra fancy quality in good sacks. The latter are worth perhaps 8c each. Aside from this limited call for ex tra fancy quality, there is little trade showing' for potatoes. Ordinary and poor stuff cannot be sold at any price. A buyer refused to buy some rather good potatoes yesterday afternoon in the country at 25c a cental. Even a year ago, when the greatest crop by far ever produced was turned upon the market, there was never a time when the outlook for values was so poor as at this time. Stock Market Hit By a Bad Rumor New York. March 26. -The stock market was generally under pressure today. Rumor that the New York Central Intended to cancel Its inquiry for 3700 cars, gave some ammunition to tne nears and wnne me selling was not heavy, it was pesistent. The fact that Pennsylvania Is re ported to be in the market for 150,000 tons or steel, gave that security a fair amount of steadiness today and en abled it to withstand the general bear ish pressure. Canadian Pacific was heavy on an ticipation of early completion of new transcontinental competitors. Herrln. grand chief os honor. vii - Vital Statistics marriages. Birtfc. Deaths. MARRIAGE XSES Gomez Palaclo Retaken. El Paso. Texas, March 26. Fight ing at Gomes Palaclo was still in prog ress at midnight, according to a dis patch from General Villa received by Ueneral Chao at Juarez today. Themes Bage, filed at El Verel, Villa's base five miles north of Gomez Palaclo, said the rebels had silenced several federal batteries and expected to re capture Gomez Palaclo toaay. The dispatch was the only one received from the fighting line since early yes terday afternoon, the censorship hav ing prevented the news correspond ents from Bending a word. The Mexico City claim that the rebels had been routed was scoffed at by General Chao, who pointed out that if Villa s men were retreating in dis order, as the federals said, Villa him self could not be telegraphing from El Verjel. If definite news was lacking, rumors were not. There were dozens in circu lation and they varied according to their federal or rebel origin. One of them had it that the federals defeated the rebels, put them to flight and chased them to Corralitos. 12 miles north of Torreon, in a single day. Another account was to the effect that out of one battalion of 300 federals, 68 were killed and 200 captured. A third told or the execution by General Bona, vides of 200 federal prisoners. There was not the least reason, ac cording to General Chao, to believe any of these stories true. BEX, la ATJCTTOH COM J. A. Mearow, Auctioneer.
