THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH ,8, 1914. 11 POLITICAL EVENTS IN SWEDEN ARE FAST APPROACHING CRISIS RAISING ELK-A GENTLE BUSINESS IN A WILD LAND King Gu'stav Has So Offended . His Subjects That His Ab- dicajion Openly Advocated By Frederick Werner. (Br the International Mwi Service.) Berlin,, March 7. Germans have been following with the greatest Inter est the- evolution of recent events "in Sweden, and hope tliat the kaiser has been able to Interpret the writing on the wall, remembering the old Latin proverb that your home, too, is In dancer when the adjoining house Is afire. That the kaiser has been and still Is Intensely Interested In the great struggle between the Swedish people and their king,, whose old-fashioned j zaiin in me personal power ana iniitia- I tlve of kings may before Ion add an other republic to- those already estab lished In Europe, no one doubts. King Gustav Is a- personal friend of the kaiser, who shares his vlewis of the divine right of kings, and the queen of Sweden la a German born i princess, whom many people in Sweden openly f accuse of having urged her husband to adopt the tactics i which ! may ab ruptly terminate the history of the Barmadottes as a reigning family. Parliament's Dissolution Imminent. There la a temporary lull In the po litical crisis in Sweden at present. A conservative cabinet has been formed after many difficulties, but a disso lution of the Swedish Riksdag la Im minent and everybody knows that the radical element will come back in in creased numbers after the : elections. At the very best the king -'will then have to go to Canossa or even be forced to abdicate in favor of hi aon, whose ideas are more democratic, while even a Swedish republic is a possibility. The Swedes are an ex ceedingly proud people and have shown before that they will permit no mon arch to dictate to them. It Is characteristic of the present situation in Sweden that neither the king nor the cabinet dare do anything to atop the violent republican propa ganda which goes on openly. A new paper, "Republlken," appeared In Stockholm a few days after the king's number of subscribers In all parts of the country. In a leading article uiii der the heading. "No Retreat," which I have Just read, It Is stated that the demand for a republic l rapidly .spreading, not only among jthe work- v Ing classes, but even among; the. peas ants and the well-to-do middle classes, the backbone of Sweden. These peo ple will not be satisfied with any com. ' promise, the paper oays, the iking must go even If he now seems willing to apologize. . A cartoon shows tho way to kick a klhg down the stairs and on i the front page of the paper is a large drawing showing a worklngman tak- Ing the crown ..from King : Glustaf's head and throwing this "article of luxury" away. Elks when they held their national conven tion in Portland In July, 112. These were from Elk ranch In Chehalis county, where live the 13 Olsons, a family of six boys and seven girls, as interesting in their own way aa their KiK-aomesticaung avocation. with all its Intrepid explorativeness the honking automobile has never startled the residents of Elk ranch. One -must go by train to Hoqulam. Twenty-eight miles from Hoquiam is a place with a queer name, Hump- tulips, and the way to It la by auto mobile road. But here the gas wagon stops. The rest of the way Into Quinault lake must be made by Btage or horseback, "rough punching"' they call it, through heavy timber and un touched country. Soon, the Olsons Bay, there will be an automobile road all the way In. , The lake is nearly five miles long and over three miles wide. So great is its depth that a plumb line reach ing down 600 feet has not yet touched bottom. In Its depths, great trout but more of this further on. The outlet of the lake is called the Lower Quinault, the lnle the Upper Quinault river and it has north, south and east forks about 15 miles from the lake. The lower river between lake and ocean Is about 36 miles. Both rivers are navigable for Indian canoes. The run by canoe from lake to ocean in six hours is one of the big features of a visit in the country. From the lake a splendid view of the Olympic mountains may be had and on the north side the mountains seem to rise almost sheer from the water. i So much for the geography and at mosphere. The Beginning of a Business. Sixteen years ago the Olson boys caught a small elk and were so gentle with It that it soon preferred the com pany of its captors to the wild. It was the beginning of the herd. Others were added. Elk ranch was established eight miles from the l&ke. Twenty-one elk have been sold through the coun- In the Quinault Lake elk region. At one time the herd had 15 mem bers and this Is the largest It has ever been. In the winter time the wild elk come down from their mountain fastnesses and seek the company of their domesticated kind. In the Bum mer time the elk of the ranch are given a taste of freedom. They are turned out to shift for themselves. Into the mountains they go, following the spring time in its swift advance upward, seeking out the first growth of tender grass and feasting right royally. But they are always glad to get back again with the frosts. They step gin gerly, yet gladly, down the hill sides, and come nosing about the entrance to the enclosure, within, they; feel Bate. Then they turn upon the dogs that put them to flight in the open, Even their fear of their age-old ene mies, the cougar, the wildcat and the bear, lessens. A Bear Story. Speaking about bears last winter Ignar Olson, one of the 13. found a bear in one of his traps. He had no gun, he was a good ways from borne and he decided to kill that bear with a club. So he advanced upon him strik ing lustily. The bear was a big one. He fought back with all his might ignar got .some pretty rough jolts. The bear retreated, fending himself with his paws. Ignar In the heat of tlte battle suddenly noticed that the bear had gotten farther than the reach of the chain attached to the trap. The bear was loose. Both discovered the fact at the same second. Both imme diately decided there had been enough of a fight, ignar ran for his life. So did the bear in the opposite dlrec- Elk and bear are only a small part of the story. When the middle of March comes, , one with a boat may troll In the lake for the giant trout and be more than satisfied with the sport of trying. to land the battlers weighing 10 to' 12 pounds. When the lake fish ing slackens about the middle of June It becomes best In the lower river and until October the fly- fisherman may have the time of his life. In the upper river fishing Is good nearly all the time, and 15 miles from the lake may be found some of the best mountain trout fishing known to anyone. Over on the east fork or tne upper Quinault, canny fishermen one like Fritohiof Olson takes a species oi trout, unnamed by th people of the district, Which attains a length vf 89 Inches. In the big creeks are caugnx the steelheads, and early-in the surri mer comes the run of Quinault salmon. In the rugged mountains first con sideration must be given the wonderful scenery, but there is also abundance of game and birds. Cougars and wild cats used to be more abundant than now, but the hunters anxious for the bounty have lessened their number, and thus give the deer and elk better Chance to flourish. The Olson boys have four of the best cougar dogs in the country and they afford their vis itors some exciting experiences ,wnen they go out on a hunt. They trap a good many mink and find beavers which the law forbids taking. Ignar Olson spends much of his time during the spring hunting and shooting bears for fur. He is not unwilling to kill them later in the summer for that matter, because they are death on the young elk. As would be expected, the splendor of mountain views, the restffllness of rushing streams, the aest of fishing, the thrill of the hunt, the fascination of the mountain trail, attract each succeeding season a greater number of mountain tourists, so that they have provided accommodations for them. with pacK norses ana charting of the trails and leadership to the points of interest. Elma Olson, not the least enthusiastic of the 13 for the fact that she is a girl, who has been In Portland this winter, says she will challenge anyone to. furnish anybody a better time than her brothers have prepared for their visitors and the mountain tourists.
