DE PALMA NEVER PUT BRAKES RACER vANDERBILT CUP RACE Perfect Mechanical Score En ables Race Driver to Re peat in Classic Event. Santa Monica, Cal., Feb. 27. A per f fact mechanical score enabled' Ralph j Da Pal ma to capture the Vanderbtlt cup yesterday for the second conaecu : ttve time, according to the verdict to- day of automobile experts gathered bare for the races. Da Falma'a rare Judgment and brll . llant bursts of spefd when pressed by his opponents were factors. In the re sult, It was admitted, but the fact that ha completed the 294 mil of the race without a atop stand as the most noteworthy achievement of the race. Barney Oldfield. , runner-up,- who forced De Palma. to the j limit in the most gruellinar, - heart -breaking duet ever Been on a ' southern California track, divided public commendation to day with the winner. In spite of three Visits to the pits, OldfieW finished but one minute and 20 seconds behind De Palma, who traveled the route in 3 hours, 63 minutes and 41 seconds, at an average speed of 75.5 miles an hour, breaking the Vanderbtlt ciip record. Oldfleld and De Palma. will renew their aerial battle in the International Grand Prix ; tomorrow, but they will have to contend with other speed mas ters who were forced oiit of yester day's contest by mechanical troubles. Furthermore, Teddy Tetfclaff, holder of the American road race record of better than 78 miles an hour, made on the same course, will be an added en trant In the Orand Prix. Yesterday's, race was riir without a serious accident. Eddie Pullen caused a thrill when his car overturned at 85 mllea an hour, but he and his mechan ician escaped unhurt.
