PORTLAND HOG PRICES RULING HIGHEST IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OUTSIDE IS OFFERING LOWER PRICES FOR lEGGS ALONG STREET Local Market Is Weaker With Some Stock Accumulating; Receipts Increase but Greater Volume Is Expected During Next Week. . DECREASED MAKE OF CHEESE TO BE SHOWN IN TILLAMOOK COUNTY J. H. Reeve, Wejl Known Local Handler, Returns From Inspec tion and Reports Shortage; Price . Is Reing Held at High Point: The Outtiut of cheese At Tillamook at this time Is somewhat below the normal even f or this period of the sea- buttzb rural TO SSOF. There will be a sharp drop In tne prion ox joeai suiter aaonaay monuuf, The loss will do at loaat SHo and per haps mora, Ths decline la bains forced by the lower prices In California and heavy shipments of stock from that rtato Into this territory. The market for eggs Is again weaker and! lower along the street. While local sales are being made as high aa 23c a dozen for limited supplies, the trade U unable" to clean up at this price. The best price now available for northern shipment is 21c a dozen and some of the leaders are not willing lo pay above 20c today. While receipts of eggs have been very liberal to date the market has held remarkably well up to this time. Yesterday and today the market showed real weakness and forced price concession. With Ban Francisco quoting 22c for extras today It is not believed that the local market will show much change within the Immediate future, although much will depend upon what the south quotes. It is reported that some of the leading country stores are holding 'their eggs for higher prices. These visually are shipped to market on Monday or Tuesday.! If the re ceipts become unusually heavy at that time prices will very likely drop. CHICKENS ARE VERY FIRM eon. Word to that effect! was brought back to Portland by J. H. Reeves, con- this city. I . "There Is only a very small produc tion of cheese in the Tillamook sec tion at this time. The output at pres ent. Is perhaps S per cent of the nor mal output. While the make at this period of the year is usually of small volume, still this year's output to date nas snown a decrease rrom what was turned out a year aao. I "In, reality there is practically no cheese now being offered to the trade by Tillamook makers. Naturally this Is keeping the trade undersupplled and is having the effect of holding the price very firm. ! "The Tillamook association aeems to have even a stronger hold on the trade mare man in lormer years. To make Portland the distributing center for the vast supplies of Colum bia river smelt caught annually in ti e Cowlitz river, is the plan of B Wells of the E. Wells company of Kelso. Mr. Wells is known as the Smelt King of the Cowlitz. "We have made rather heavy -shipments of fresh smelt from the Cowlitz to Chicago,-Kansas City, Denver and Omaha during the last few weeks and have demonstrated clearly that there is a big field for this business in future years. The smelt have arrived in the eastern markets in excellent condition and have brought very favorable re turns to shippers. 'Beginning Monday we intend to make Portland the headquarters for smelt shipments to all points In this district. We have been forced to take this step in order to secure better rm rates ror our customers ana ve the plan will prove a big suc cess.
