i is. SECTION TWO; V EDITORIAL REAL ESTATE BUILDING NEWS EIGHT PAGES A: MARKET AND FINANCIAZi NEWS OP COUNTRY , COOPERATIVE STORE AT RED COLLEGE IS SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR First Half Year of Operation ;4 Justifies Establishment of "The Co-op." One of th most Important enter prises now being- carried on at Reed college Is the cooperative atore. The atore waa started in June, 1913, with a total capital of $100. The trial balance struck at the end of the first six months show a net rain In the bualnees of $881.78. The fact that in the one semester that It has been open the store has almost quadrupled its capital points toward Its permanent success. The present stock la valued at I617.S7. Nearly 100 charge accounts with the students are carried at all times. The store thus makes It easier for the stu. dents to buy their books and supplies, lor tneir credit' is always good. Ac cording to Lloyd H. Carrlck, who man ages the store, not a cent has been lost on bad credit slnoe the store began business. The store nofqnly handles books but athletic supplies.' general stationery supplies, college novelties, and the like. By means of a requisition system the store is able to save something for the students on almost anything they want to buy from down town stores. The O. A. C. glee club sang for the Reed students at Wednesday s assem bly. Before the assembly the members of the club were shown about the grounds and through the buildings. Professor Norman F. Coleman; spoke twice yesterday at the Trl-State con vention of the T. M. C. A., which ends today at Vancouver. His subject was Bible study. Mr. Coleman, for several years, has taken an active part in the association work in the northwest. He is one of the college's strongest speakers. "The Man Of Destiny," the student play which has been postponed from time to time, has been definitely sched uled for Wednesday, February 18, in I the men's social room. Because of the . sentiment of a minority of the faculty, the chapel win not be used for the piay. This probably means that a I precedent in this regard is being set. The stage management of the play has been given over to Elizabeth McUaw, Rumana McManls having resigned. 1 WW. ' At an Interesting meeting of the Deutscher Vereln, Mr. J. J. Btahl of the German department, spoke on Su-I dermann a "Die Heimat, or "Magda," as it is known in English. At a busi ness meeting the following- officers were named: President, Arthur liauck; j vice president, Ada McCown; treasurer, Oscar Koenig; secretary, Frieda Brat xel; librarian, Lois Williams. ' - Doctor Ewer, professor" of philoso phy., made an address Wednesday aft ernoon before the Women's Alliance of I the First Unitarian church. Ills sub ject was "Mathew, Mark and Luke." Dr.- Matson; one of the foremost ex ports on tuberculosis in the country, I spoke before the Biology club on Tues day evening. After the talk n- an 'swered questions. The Reed college loan fund has been increased by a gift of $1000 made by R. A. Booth. Two other loan funds, the Fechhelrner and the Alice Houston, have been made previously. They ad- I mit of sevesai students obtaining col legiate work who otherwise would be deprived of its advantages. The Reed rally In the college gym nasium Friday night was a "howling" success, In more ways than one. In the lnter-c!ass yell contest the fresh men won the banner; the sophomores won for the best song and the Juniors for the best stunt. The evening's pro gram was opened by a serpentine dance by the men; the college women in a fancy dance spelled the word Reed. The faculty members presented a humorous charade spelling the word Foster. Miss Florence M. Reed, President Foster and A. E. Wood in & burlesque on the Cop- perf ltld raid, a representation of "Thou" depicting Omar Khayyam's , book of verse, by Miss Eleanor Row land, a "Dance of the Seven Veils'" by M. P. Cushlng, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Tor- rey as Adam and Eve in 'the garden episode, and Professor N. F. Coleman as President Foster at a faculty meet ing, were features of the charade. A I tumbling -exhibition by student gym nasts followed. ; PORTLAND. OREGON, SUNDAY MORNING. FEBRUARY 8. 1814.
