THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SATURDAY : EVENING, JANUARY 10, 1914. 9 DURING PAST WEEK Do Young's Resignation fol lows Decision Taylor and Grace Church Remain One Benjamin Young, D, D. Some very Important church history was made for Methodism during the past week through the announcement of Bishop R. J. Cooke that the First M. J3. church, which Is a combination of the former Grace .1.1. K. and the Taylor street M. E. churches, must stand In spite of the lively War waged by some to dissolve It, and the an nouncement by Rev. Benjamin Young, pastor of the combined churchy. that he had tendered his resignation, and intended to leave for some otherpas- to rate. j Among the two factions were many ;who believed that Bishop Cooke would sustain me union, but very few, if any one, knew of the Intention of Dr .Young to resign as soon as the dispute .over tae piaa to. dissolve the union jwas made. "It was done in the best Interests tot the church," said Dr, Young. "There j"r, iuupo uniuug me unuea congre gation who desired another leader, and while I have scores of friends who .nave urged me to remain, 1 some one else can come who will be satisfactory to all." , Another feature is the closing of the old Taylor street church, on the order of the bishop, with orders for ' all members of the church to attend .services , at the Grace church site at Twelfth and - Taylor strets, over .which Dr. Young will preside, until It is time 'or him to go to some other pulpit. I "I don't kaow where I shall go, nor ,when, apd f have no idea who will .come here, but there are many fine .men in the east who want to come ,west .and there will be no trouble in finding a man for the place here," said Dr. Young. "It is possible that an ex change of pulpits will be made, but 'that la not known for certain. The IMPORTANT HISTORY IS MADE FOR METHODISM iSH. Morrison, all speaking on themes of practical Inter est. F Tomorrow afternoon Miss j Eleanor Rowland, professor of Psychology at Reed college, will speak on "Psyeology and the Delinqulnt Classes." j Recent revelations concerning methods of treating the wards of society are said to have revealed a lamentable failure to help or Improve them and Dr. Row land will speak of the recent advance through phychology toward i solving this problem. Arrangements are being perfected for the second lecture in the Reed college extension course now being given at the Universalis church Mon day evenings. Professor Arthur Kvans Wood la in charge and will be heard next Monday on "The Finances of a City or What Makes Taxes and Bonded Indebtedness for Those Who Would Own a Home?" Stereoptican views are used to Illustrate the lectures. A fine supper was served Tuesday evening In the social hall of the Uni versalis! church for the Sunday school teachers who met to consider ways and means to better the fine work this school Is doing. Annual Meeting! K -ine annual meeting of the congre gation of the ITnlversalist church will be held next Tuesday evening in the social hall of the church, Broadway and East Twenty-fourth street. The officers of the parish under Dr. David Breuer, the president, are tabulating their reports whjch promise to show one of the best years for this organ! .ration. At the family supper table will be held the election of the new trustees and suggestions from all departments how to extend the ministry of this so cial center to an enlarging group. There is to be fine musia, witty nneeches and a general happy; time. "Man and the Church" Rev. Dr. W. S. Bovard, secretary o? the Methodist Brotherhood, the man who previous to his election to this office has held some of the most in fluential positions In the church, will speak at Centenary church. East Ninth and Pine streets, tomorrow evening. Dr. Bovard is touring the coast in the interest of the Brotherhood. He will peak on some phase of the question, "The Man and the Church." , At 11 a. m. Dr. John Parsons, who was 10 years superintendent of Methodist Mis sions In Alaska, will speak on "Re ligious Work in Alaska," The following is the musical pro gram for the day: "O Lord Most .Merciful," Conlene, choir; "The Lord Is My Light," Lid die, Mrs. Miller; ."Lead Me 1 Gently Home," Thompspn, choir; "Blessed Re deemer." Deny a, Mrs. Miller and choir. There will be a gospel service in the evening. matter Is in the hands of a supply committee named early this week." The question of a new church, which must surely be erected in the near fu ture to house the First M. E. church, is yet undecided. Several suggestions have been made, but none Is as yet ac ceptable to all. The closing of the Taylor street church, which will be done after the two services tomorrow, is regretted by many of those who have declared the. building to be good enough for the home of Methodism in Portland for some time to come. It is likely that it will never be used for chureh purposes again, unless It is de cided to build the new structure, which is sure to come, at the site on Twelfth and Taylor strets, when it would be used until the completion of the new home. 8. 10. Benjamin Yonng, pastor First 91. E. Church. Religion is not a fire' escape hung out of the back window of hell. An acrobat may be all right in a circus, but he is no good in a moral crisis. There Is a difference betwen whale bone and backbone. It is not supple ness of character, but strength of character which counts. A faith which expresses, itself in psalm-singing and which has no out let In practical life is not worth "30 cents." A fhistle makes a poor ffg tree. The graces of Christian character do not grow out of an evil heart. A boy reported a familiar text thus: "He that humpeth himself shall be exalted." The text really was: "He that humbleth himself shall be ex alted." - A good many people have their re CHURCH NOTES . K Rev. Mr. A. L.
