CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR. MOVEMENT THIRD OF CENTURY OLD FEB. 2 Growth Illustrated by Size of Great Convention Held at Los Angeles Last Year. ' liy Clarence H. Spraxue. Orr February. 1914, Ue great world-wide movement,' known as Chris."1 tlan Endeavor, will be 33 years old. The, past year witnessed the greatest poung people's convention ever held. In Lkh Angrelew, last July.'' This con vention was remarkable for many things. In it were gathered 10.001 registered delegates from jail parts of the world, representing a 'ijnkghty force of nearly 5,000,000 of members. An other feature was that of the launch ing of tbe nation-wld? temperance Jwork under the leadership of Kev. Daniel A. Poling of Portland. As na tional superintendent of temperance and good citizenship , work for, the United Society of Christian Endeavor. The outstanding feature of the six days' gathering was the niessage of the president "f the United tfocjefy; Rev. Francis K. Clark of Boston, ofte.n failed "Father Kndeavor" Clark. He brought to the convention a review of the past three decades and then, with Ills seemingly prophetic power; turned his audience for a look toward the future. And in this looking forward Dr. 'Clark drew for all the Kndeavor ers of the world the -vision that Is to mean much to the life and effective ness of the society. - Among other things , of his address there appeared preeminently ,hts proposal for the. ob servance' of the week following the anniversary of the foundiiig of Chris tian Kndeavor, as "Increase and Kffi tciency Wef-k." Step by step lie out! lined the definite plan of work to be followed out. Tlie thoughtful look hrto thu future, the intense personal ity of their leader, the wonderful vis loh of what a wek such as outlined would do or the Individual and the society, all blended together to make the receiving of Ir. Clark's sugges tion unanimous, and in the --last mo ments of tbe convention, when tlio res olutions were presented, the plan was heartily indorsed. Not .only this, but several hundred peopjo have then and Kince, by personal letters, unsolicited, heartily Indorsed the plan, thus as suring its wide adoption. One of JLhe evenings outlined for the Increase audi Efficiency Week was a social evening, when some sort of en tertainment was to be given for the purpose of advancing the lo-al and world-wide work alike. In order that the best of entertainment plans might be secured for the occasion, the United Society offered a prize of $100 to the KndeaVorer whs would present the best suggestions for such an enter tainment. The contest iff over and an excellent form of entertainment has been offered, which means that many societies will be greatly helped in at least one of the parts of the week's program. The entire plan, in all its details, for the Christian Kndeavor week has been placed In booklet rorni ana at present a largo number of them are on hand with the Oregon Christian Kndeavor president, G. Kvert Flaker, nt 305 I jew Is building. Every society should .make plans Immediately for the observance of the week In their respective churches, following the general-, plan as ;ch)sely as is possible. It fTlus be -a week when Oregon Kn deavorers shall ! move forward many steps. To tliis end the city union offi cers' urge every Kndeavor president' to get one? of the booklets, and then go to. work In earnest. City and state union workers, of all denominations, will be available for rendering assist ance in any way during the Christian Kndeavor week. American typewriters, of which five kinds are in the field virtually mon opolize the French market. MEETING NOTICES AND Baptilt Eirt White Temple. W. B. Mlnnon. p-stor. Bible ohlxl 10. Discusses Mexico k a "Mexico and the Southwest Border" was the theme under which Rev. Rob ert McLean, D. D., of Los Angeles, discussed the Mexican problem, and our relations to it in the Anabel Tresbyterian church, last Sunday night. Dr. McLean Is superintendent of Mex ican work in the southwest, under the tresbyterian boards of home missions, and has been visiting his son. Rev. Robert N. McLean, of the Anabel church, during the holidays. "My sympathies.' said Dr. McLean, are entirely with the constitutionalists. The assassin Huerta, is impossible; and It is the avowed pledge of .the con stitutionalist soldiers to stand him against the wull. Our public press is appalled with the indignities which have been practiced by Villa. We are told that he confiscates property. "Terranza, who has received so much sympathy, owned practically the whole state of Chihuahua; and-he owned it because of a corrupt condition of af fairs ,in Mexico which has made possi ble the establishment of immense landed estates at the expense of the middle and lower classes. ' The con stitutionalists are fighting for their rights, and the methods., which they are using are the terrible methods of war." DIRECTORY OF Hawthorne Park L. , K. Grimes, pastor. S. S noon.
