Hart of 1075 Kat Fourteenth treet north, one of the first men in the jiorthwest to import the Carmeaux jtlgeon, la one of the produest exhibit ion at the Oregon Poultry and Pet Stock jMaociatlon ehow now being held in the jiew Falling building, his display belnsc fome of the finest pigeons ever seen in Portland. ''In commenting on his birds Mr. Hart Bald: "The Carmeaux Is one of the most thrifty birds ever brought to the west. A pair will raise from 9 to 11 birds each year and in some cases I have known them to produce 12 squabs. For show and market purposes they are uperlor to any other bird, being much larger and their meat much whiter. ThlH breed has attracted a threat dal f attention among the members of the Oregon Squab association, of which I am a member and they are appreciating more and more their value." When In the humor, which is most of the time when he is at home, Tom can talk, sing, whistle, crow.bark and imi tate noises, much to the amusement of spectators and to- the dlsoomfort of the mother of the owner, who is often de ceived by Tom's noises. Neighbors will often call to Mrs. Crewdson and Tom has learned to imitate the call so well that Mrs. Crewdson Is constantly rush ing to the door in order not to offend the neighbors In case It is they signal ling. The noise of the cleaning one's feet on a wire doormat has been so thor oughly imitated that often Mrs. Crewd son Imagines e.ne Is about to receive guests. Tern has a very decided liking for be ing tickled as far down the throat as Mr. Crewdson can force his finger, and Tom will stand for 10 or. 16 minutes to enjoy those caresses. When Mr. Crewd son Is tired of petting the bird In that manner, and attempts to pull his finger out. Tom will shut down hard enough to prevent him doing bo, except vtTry grad ually. When hungry, Tom ..is very much pleased to have two or three mice dished up to him. He will take them In his bill, crush the bones, and gorges them whole, but If he is not hungry he will carefully skin the animal and select only tho choicest bits of meat. He Is the constant source of worry to the small boys In 'tho neighborhood, for he will steal their marbles and hide them under leaves or grass. If the boys do not pay him proper tribute he will gently but firmly pinch their legs with his monster beak. If tho boy happens to wear long trousers, Tom will carefully lift the leg far enough to reach the sock, and he will take hold Just a little harder for the trouble he has been put to. "Scientists have declared the raven to be the most Intelligent member of the bird family, and this raven has amply proven this assertion," said Mr. Crewdson. "They live between SO and J. W. Moora O. FOWLS ON DISPLAY AT AT THE LEAST $20,000 President of Association De clares It Is Best One Ever Held in Pacific Northwest, "I have been connected with poultry shows for 16 years and I can safely say that I believe this one to be the best ever pulled off in Portland or in the northwest," said E. II. Bauer, presi dent of the Oregon Poultry and Pet Stock association. "Some of the finest birds I ever saw In my life are on dis play here now, some of them being valued at $160 or $200. The show rep resents at least $20,000 worth of poul try, although I know it is hard for the man not familiar with the poultry busi ness to realize this. It has cost about $3500 to put on this show, and that Is another hard thing to realize. "A big feature is the record time In which the judging was done. Two days completed the work, and then came a marked catalogue, an innovation. "The general impression prevails that this show is on the high road and that from now on better and better shows will result. With all due respect to the older members of this organization. POULTRY SHOW WORTH AN .'i' iiwi'jwiimiiiin)mft that the success of this show a very great extent to the bers that have recently been the association. New blood always infuses new energies and the re sults of this year prove this conclu sively. In paying compliments, I am not overlooking tho press, which has been a most Important factor. "There Is a big demand for the eggs that are laid here during this show, and I might add that all are eating and not throwing eggs. "This show is a great aducational fea ture and we do not hesitate to say that our efforts are for better poultry. We can prove that thoroughbred poultry will produce more eggs and better mar ket stock than ordinary stock, for it Is certain that a fancier takes great Inter est In bringing his stock to the highest state of efficiency. "Haphazard methods are always de plorable. Poultry is certain to become run down, and It has' beeri plainly demonstrated that mongrel stock do not pay for their feed," concluded the presi dent an an anxious exhibitor called him away to pass his opinion of a pen of chickens.
