The attention of the county commis sioners to the law regarding the levy for school purposes has been directed by City School Clerk Thomas, County School Superintendent Armstrong and District Attorney Evans. , The law provides that a tax shall be levied which will give a per capita amount for each boy and girl between 4 and 20 years equal to the amount per capita raised in 1910, which was $8.70. District Attorney Evans interprets the law to mean that the tax must be levied- The " tax for the county, as figured by Superintendent Armstrong, would amount Co 1.4 mills on a valuation of $340,000,000, and would bring In $478,000. Allowing for taxes not collected and re bates, he figured that such levy would give the required amount, or $458,751 for the 52,730 boys and girls of school age in the county. Of this the eity would claim about $375,000 for 43,000 of these boys and girls In the city. The county commissioners last year provided a levy which allowed but $7.25 per capita,' and it was figured the schools lost about $o4, 000. This money provides the regular support of the schools, and has no connection with the special school levy proposed fotjichool district No. 1. The commissioners will consider the matter with the rest of the 1914 budget I. 0. 0. F. TO INITIATE BIG CLASS AT NEWBERG Ellison Encampment No. 1, I. O. O.
