of . the town of Wheeler, on Tillamook
bay, clamoring for the Pacific Railway
& Navigation company to duiiq us pro

demanding that the new depot be lo
cated in Its midst, the railroad officials
are In auoh a quandary that they have
appealed to the railroad commission to
settle the matter.
A third feature, which has a sig
nificant bearing on the situation, is that
the Wheeler Lumber company has do
nated to the railroad company a tract
of ground about Jialf way between the
warring districts of the town for depot
purposes. The railroad company, wants
to build on- that site. It appears there
are no houses in the half mile space
between the two parts of the town

cently secured as an additional grade

Kirk Thompson has been elected man

Last Tuesday Dr. Karah Whiteside de
livered a hygiene lecture before the girls

Not a single case of contagious dis
ease has appeared In Greshnm school
this year. Miss Katharine Kelly, in
spector of rural schools for the State
Board of Health, inspected the school

DEAF MUTE KILLED

Saleiif, Or., Nov. 18. While running
to a store a few blocks away for some
candy, Earl Lucy, a deaf mute, attending
the state school for -the deaf, was struck
yesterday attorpoon by an Oregon ""Elec
tric train 'and killed. The boy, who
was about IB' years old, had obtained
permission to go to the store during an
Intermission of school, but Instead of
going around by the walk, he attempted
a Short cut along the railroad track,
and evidently did not see the train com
ing. The boy's mother moved recently

grade final examinations will be held
during the school year, and State School
Superintendent J. A. Churchill has an
nounced that county superintendents
may select three of the following dates:
January 1S-16, May T-8, June 4-6; or
September 8-4, all In 1914.
Superintendent Churchill " has an
nounced the sources of the questions
that will be asked In the examinations,
Regarding the examinations in agri
culture, he explains that If the appli
cant has a good garden or has done any
creditable work In agriculture, tho
teacher may give 80 per cent for such
work, and the pupil may answer only
seven questions In agriculture. If the
pupil does not make a pksslng grade in
this subject, the county superintendent
may give not more than 25 per cent tor
a creditable exhibit which the applicant
may have made at a district, county or
state fair.

OLD FASHIONED SHOW

fair given Friday evening at the city hall
by the Women's society of 'the Presby
terian church in the form of an old
fashioned concert at which sweet old
time songs were sung, ending with
"Auld Lang Syne." The entertainment
opened "at candle light." Yodellng and

humorous songs. Solos were rendered

St. Helena, Dr., Nov. 18. There Is no
city of lloulton. As a reul of Bstur
dny'B election, at which taxpayers voted
on the proposition of consolidating-' St.
Helens and lloulton. both communities
voted strongly In favor of .the move,
and both communities fittingly cele
brated. the occasion Saturday night.
In St. Helens tho vote was 150 to 54
tain Houltou the vote was 86 to ia. Both
communities are expected to gain, ma
terial advantages as a result ef con
solidation. The combined towns ' will
be known as St. Helens.
The change will put St. Helens on
the railroad map and will give Houltton
a good high school.
Increased prosperity Is expected.

stumps on th,e old Brlxey ranch, south
of town, Charles P. Marquis, aged 67,
met Instant death from an explosion
of one of the dyhamlte charges. The
Brbxey place is- owned by Paul
Hcnschke, who had hired Marquis to
dear his land, Marouls being a powder
expert.' A number of charges had been
placed, all golog off but one. Believing
that the fuse - had gone out, Marquis,
Henschko and Elmer Hanley, son of Ira
Hanley, ventured to make an Investiga
tion, when the delayed charge went off.
