" Mr. Morgan was born In Montgomery county, Tennessee, in 1S5; his father ! and mother are natives of Kentucky and his four grandparents were natives of tha Old Dominion. . In 119t be was sent to Jackson, Ten nessee, to take charge of tha Metro polltan office there. A year later he was promoted to tha Nashville office. Shortly thereafter ha was - transferred to Brooklyn, New York and mada as sistant superintendent of 'the Brooklyn office of the Metropolitan Ufa Insur ance company, - r t 1 always wanted to go west," said Mr. Morgan, "and in 189 I accepted a position with tha Paclflo Mutual Ufa and came to ' Portland, arriving here Friday, August IS. I stayed with the Paclflo Mutual for five years, and than worked again three years for tha Metro politan Life." - In 1901 Mr. Morgan again went Into business for himself. His first ' venture In Portland ha made In 1888, buying an old house at Tenth and Salmon streets for $6000, on which he paid $10 cash and.agreedi to pay 1100 a month. It was hers that ha got tha Ides, of developing- tha apartment house : busi ness In Portland. He seemed to se that there was a fortune In it, and in order to equip himself for that kind of a career ha took law in tha Oregon Un iversity Law school, graduating in 10S, though he - has never practiced. Mr. Morgan has built some of the finest apartment houses on the Paciflo coast, most or wmca na stiu owns or con trols. . - , Ha was first to recognise tha fact that Grand Avenue waa a-good business street and as result he put up throe fine buildings over .there.? .
