tery surrounds the report of the drown
ing of Herman Van Winkle In the Me,
Kensle which reaohed here yesterday.
Young Van Wlnkls was a member of
the coast artillery, a former resident of
this city and a nephew of Mrs. Harry
Knowlton. He left Eugene looking for
work and nothing has since been heard
from him except this report,' the truth
of which relatives are Inclined to
doubt. The report is that younk Knowl
ton was kicked by a horse which he
had unchecked to allow to drink while
crossing the McKenzle, and was no
seriously injured that he could not set
back to the vehicle or to shore.

The warrants were contested on the
grounds that they were issued in excess
of the constitutional limit on county

New Fire Alarms at Hood.

fire alarm system is being installed by
the city to take the place of the old
rope pulling plant that has served the
city for the past quarter of a cenury.

neral of Mrs. Susan B. Park, of this
place, who died of neuralgia, at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Susan Ida Apeei,
was held Sunday. Rev. William Vlmont,
pastor of the First Methodist church of
ficiated. Mrs. Park was 82 years old. She Is
survived by three daughters: Mrs. Anna
E. Mutzer, of Ca iden, New Jersey; Mrs.
8. E. Bernardo, ofv Seattle, Wash., and
Mrs. Susan Ida Appel of Ridgefleld. She
Is also survived by 21 grandchildren
and five great grandchildren.

had lived in this county 12 years. Com
ing here from Minnesota. He was born
at Bangor, Maine, where ho' lived until
5 years old, when he moved with his
parents to Bellvue, lowa.
In 1872, while living in Iowa, he was
married to Miss Louisa Baker, lie Is
survived by his widow and three sons
and one daughter. The daughter lives
in California, and funeral services will
not be held until her arrival.

Vaughn, a prominent social worker re
cently indicted on a charge of attempt
ing to blackmail Judge R. M. Widney of

home here,' according to the police.
Judge Widney, who Is here defending
his son Arthur on charges of accepting
money from a woman of the under
world alleged that Mrs. Vaughn offered
to secure the dismissal of charges
against ids son for G0O. The police
allege Mrs. Vaughn disappeared three
days ago.
After a week's stay at the home of
Mrs. Vaughn, Mrs. Vivien Lyons of
Denver, Involved in several affairs with
Robert J. Widney, also a son of Judge
Wridney, alleges she Is a nervous wreck,
and Is taking the rest cure at a local
sanitarium. Mrs. Lyons alleges aha
was so badly treated that she was on
the verge of collapse when taken from
the Vaughn home.

Wallas Frontier Days is a success.
Judging from the first day's show and
attendance. The grandstand and the
new bleachers were crowded and the
show was one of the best ever seen In
the west. The program consisted of 87
events, many of which were new.
One of the most spectacular events
was the roping of a large bear which
was liberated In the arena. Another
event that proved popular with the 17,
000 spectators was the chariot race
The bull-dogging, steer roping and
bucking were good. Several riders were
thrown In the latter event and in the
wild horse race, with which tha pro
gram closed, a number of the buckaroos
were Injured. P. K. Wilson wta thrown
and trampled and a number of the other
entrants were unseated.
