President Wilson will attend the In
auguration of Professor A. T. .Ormonl,
as president of Grove City college, Penn
sylvania. Dr. Ormond was a professor
at Princeton 27 years, and was closely
asscociated with the president whitest

Washington, President Wilson has at
tended a vaudeville show. He received
an ovation as he took his place in the
box with Secretary Tumulty and Dr.
C. T. Grayson, United States navy, his
physician.
Secretary of agriculture has decided

ath resident, whose application for land
had been denied by the forestry offi
cials on the ground that the land was
not fit for a homestead.
Three counterfeit national bank notes
are in circulation, says W. H. Moran,
acting chief of the United States secret
service. The cleverest is an Imitation
of a $20 note of the National Bank of
Baltimore.

senate as postmaster at Sacramento,

goes to a conference committee today.
The majority plans to put through a
special rule to head off Republican de
bate. The administration currency bill will
not be taken up in detail until next
week. In the meantime the oratorical
display which has already commenced
will be continued.

consin, Penrose of Pennsylvania and
Lodge of Massachusetts. Speaker Clark

Olympia, Wash., Sept. 11. An echo
of the Dr. Llnday Burfleld Hazzard
murder trial waa heard yesterday, when
the supreme court affirmed the Judg
ment of the Kitsap county superior
court dismissing Dr. Haxzard as guard
ian cf tho person and property of E.
Dorothy Williamson, sister of Claire
Williamson, whose death caused the
conviction of the woman fast specialist
on the charge of manslaughter.
Shortly before the younger girl died
in the fast sanitarium at Olalla, Mrs.
Hazsarr1. went into court and waa ap
pointed guardian of tha older one, who
had $1324 in the bank at that time.
Later, Mrs. Hazzurd received $260 more
from the girl and a note for $250. This
wr over and above "a large sum of
money that had been paid for treat
ments. When Mrs. Hazzard was dis
charged as guardian the court ordered
her to turn over to the girl the note
and $856.76, which sum represented the
money that had been paid from time to
time while Miss Williamson was in the
sanitarium. The court also allowed a
$250 attorney fee. Tiie judgment ia
affirmed by the supreme court with the
exception of the Item for attorney's fee,
which was ordered stricken.
ROSEBURG MAN'S DEATH .
. HAD PECULIAR FEATURES
Cottage Grove, Or., Sept. 11. Word
has reached her of peculiar circum
stances surrounding the death recent
ly at Aberdeen, Wash., of F. H. Rosen
burg, former secretary of the Cottage
Grove Commercial club.
The first story of his death was that
it resulted from an unusual form of
ptomaine poisoning, which had resulted
in the paralysis of the organs . of the
throat. Later Information is to the ef
fect that Mr. Rosenburg died on the
operating table, and that one of the in
surance companleSgrefuBes to pay the
claim against it on this account. It
seems that the seriousness of the case
was not known either to Mr. or Mrs.
Rosenburg. Mr. Rosenburg was at a
hospital and when his wife called up
to ask concerning his condition, she was
asked to come to the hospital at one
as her husband was dying.
On her way there a friend met her
and informed her that her husband was
dead, following an operation which she
did not know was to be performed. It
Is understood that the physician who
performed the operation cannot be found
to give testimony In the suit brought
against the Insurance company. Th
Insurance company claims that while
ptomaine poisoning may have existed It
was not the cause of death.
EQUIPMENT ON HAND

Eugene, Or., Sept. 11. A complete
road building equipment Is now la th
hands of the comjn&tee which he's
charge of the campaign for the rebuild
ing of the McKenzle valley highway. All
the equipment needed to complete the
project has been secured.
Ber. F. Minney, who is said to be the
best road builder in the McKenzle val
ley, has been engaged to superintend
the. entire work, and W. B. Wheeler of
Leaburg will have charge of the rock
crushing crew,, and R. Roberts will di
rect grading operations. M. M. Garlock
will' be foreman of the pits.
The plant will be located about half
a mile east of Waltervllle, and the
crews will work each way till that
portion Of the road is completed and
then the plant will b moved further
east.

BALDWIN PLEADS GUILTY
TO SHOOTING YOUNG BOY

Baldwin. Indicted by the grand Jury last
winter on a charge of having fired a
shot at a passing automobile and in
juring Don Belding, entered a pica ot
guilty in the oircuit court now in session
here, was sentenced by Judge Calkins to
six months In the county Jail and wa
released on parole.
Last fall a party of high school boys
out on a Joy ride, went past the Bald
win place near town, and Baldwin
claims that they provoked him by shoot
ing at his dog with a revolver, though
the boys maintained that they were
shooting at Jackrabbits along the high
way. Baldwin grabbed up his rifle, a
82 caliber high power, and shot at the
speeding auto with its load of nine
students, and struck young Belding In
the thigh. Baldwin's indictment fol
lowed. Harry Bantu was acquitted by a Jury
In the same court on a charge of at
tempted criminal assault, the complain
ing witness being Miss Elizabeth Gal
bratth, a homesteader in the Illinois
valley.
NEWPORT SCHOOLS WELL
UNDER WAY FOR SEASON

Newport, Or., Sept. 11. The Newport
schools have a total attendanoe of 170.
This is a few less than for the open
ing week last year, but several families
are out hop picking and tourists who
spend the winter here have not yet en
tered their children.
An effort to add a kindergarten course
this year failed, the sentiment being
that the money could be better spent
in adding a manual training and domes
tic science course.
R. J. Davis has been reelected prin
cipal of the high school for the thirj
time, with Miss F. D. Chase, of Albany,
as assistant.' Grade teachers are: Miss
Bertha Allen, Miss G. C. Ryan, Miss Ti.
V. Keene, Miss- Loretta Smith and Mrs.
R, J. Davis. Miss Maud Harkleroad Is
supervisor of musio in all grades.
SALEM CHERRIANS WILL

tain the Salem Cherrians when their
special train reaohes here tonight. The
visitors will be escorted to the Hotel
Dalles, where dinner will be served.

rian Concert band. Automobile rides
about the town will be a feature of the
entertainment and when the visitors
leave for Pendleton they will be pre

ANOTHER SCENIC ROAD
Highway Will Cut Through
From Tumalo Creek to
- Sparks Lake.

Bend, Or., Sept H. A new highway
that will penetrate Into the Cascades
and open up a great scenic territory
has been authorised through the coop
eration of the forest service and Crook
county. The sum of $2000 will be ex
pended prior to July 1, 1914, equal
amounts being contributed by the forest
service and the county. The work will
start at a point on Tumalo creek near
the Columbia Southern headgate and
run to Sparks Lake. It will go by way
of Soda Springs, recognized as one of
the scenlo wonders of central Oregon.
From Bend to the beginning of the road
Is a county highway which can be made
Into a good automobile rgad with a little
work, and local people will put it in
shap before the new road Is opened.
The county and th forest eerylce
have also agreed on the expenditure of
$10U0 on the McKenzle road across the
mountains from Cold Springs to the
Lane county line, equal amounts also
being contributed for this work.

county court of Douglas county com
menced work Tuesday on the,; Pass
creek canyon road, long known as tha
worst piece of public highway between
Portland and-San Francisco. Bids sub
mitted two weeks ago were rejected and
the county court has put in Its own crew.
With continued favorable weather tha
work will yet be completed this fall.

JURY DISAGREES ON
HORSE DEATH CASE
Ontario, Or.. Sept 11. The case Of
J. W. Ward vs. Georg Routh of this)
city, which was tried Tuesday in the dis
trict court at Vale, resulted in a jury
disagreement. In this case Ward sued
to recover J1B0 for a horse which he
hired to Routh and which died while in
hire. It was contended by th plaintiff
that th hors was taken sick soon after
Routh hired it, and that regardless of
this he continued to work It and In this
manner caused Its death.
