1G THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, THURSDAY EVENINO. AUGUST 21, 1813, 8 'i SMI ER ALGOA WILL I Big Craft Will Carry 6,500,000 , Feet From Columbia River to the Antipodes, ""ij. To complete what is said to be the " largest cargo of lumber ever set afloat on the Pacific coast, beating the previ ous record cargo by over a million feet, - the British Bteamer Algoa of the Pacific Mail line, arrived at Linnton this morn, ing to take on Oregon fir for Sydney. It ia supposed that the 6,500.000 feet of v lumber, valued at approximately $130, 00, with which the Algoa will stea.ii from the Columbia river for the Antl . podes, will be the large-st that has ever been placed aboard any vessel in any - . part of the world. a M. Clark, head of the Clark & Wll 'i son mills where the steamer will taK oti her fir cargo, says that sho Is 1 feet longer than any steamer that has ever been in the river, hy length being ' 4iiB feet. 6he bus a beam of 68 feet and her depth of hold is 23.4 feet. She took out the record flour cargo from thl port a few years ago. She is 4897 ton . net register. ' The fact that A. F. Thane & Co. i the charterers, are willing to load th Algoa to her capacity here argues thei confidence in the fact that the Columbia river bar can be negotiated by the big ,gest tramp steamers. The Algoa loaded 2,748,000 feet, o reawoou lumDer at eureka before con , Ing here and the remainder of her car go of 3,762,000 feet of Douglas fir wil be taken on at Linnton. She will be at the mills loading for about 12 days. 'itie largest cargo of lumber taken on of here prior to this was on the Brltls') Bteamer Knight pf the Garter, which had ,vww, uutj reet even. The Algoa is in command of Cuptaln a. ixrcaett, who is well known here. Another lumber carrier loading for Sydney at the Linnton mills Is the No.-. wegian steamship Tlior, under charter . to uairour, Guthrie & Co. THIELUEKS PROGRESS SLOW W andsbek Sighted Her Nearly AVeek Ago Off Oregon Const. . ' In spite of the fact that the German bark- Wandsbck sighted the Germun bark Thlelbek last Sunday off the Ore gon coast, the latter has not put in an appearance yet, although out about a month longer than the Wandsbek, which reached Linnton yesterday afternoon from Santa Rpsalia. Captain Wlllielm uurmeister said that with th exceD tlon Of the Sighting of the Thlelbek and - another ship the voyage was rather un ' eventful. - ' With good stiff trades the Wands, bek made the voyage up from Santa Rosalia to Astoria in 34 days. She was . two. weeks getting out of the Gulf of it .California, which the captain says is an unusually long time. She encountered baffling calms there which prevented . her making the run ut of the gulf as . ene should have done. The American schooner Bainbridge sailed from Santa Rosalia for Port Townsend on the same - day that the Wandsbek did and was also , 14 days In getting out of the gulf. She was not sighted again by the German after getting' into the Pacific ocean. When the Wandsbek. which crossed In over the bar Tuesday, was off the , coast last Sunday she sighted the Thiel- Dea, or tne same line, which sailed from Santa Rosalia 63 days aa-o todav. On, the same day she sighted a four mas tea run rigged ship, apparently , headed for Puget Sound. He could not . make her out but remarked on the un usual sight of a four masted ship full rigged on all her sticks. Captain Burmelster was here on the last voyage of the Wandsbek to this port as her chief officer. The bark was men in. command of Captain Kohnke, who Is now in command of the German ship Rein bek loading lumber on Puget do una. As soon as the Wandsbek has dis charged her ballast at Linnton she win ,;, shift up to the local harbor to load new crop w neai ror the United Kingdom un : der charter to M. H. Houser. ALONG THE WATERFRONT '. Carrying passengers and freight, the iieamer ureas waicr, captain Macgenn. is scheduled to arrive up this evening , ijuin uiub oay. J When she arrived from Ran FVnnnio at :45 ,ast ntKht- th steamer Rose v-.iy, Lap tain KanKin, had 210 passen j gers and 1100 tons of general freight The lighthouse tender Manzanita was scheduled to leave Seattle today to re light the outer gas buoy at Willapa Bay which was reported extinguished ; by Captain Kettleson of the steamer Raymond. Laden with 800 tons of general freight, of which 100 tons is bonded cargo and the remainder from New York, the American-Hawaiian steamer Paraiso, CSptain Jaeobson, arrived at Albers' dock at 6:30 this morning from San Francisco. Considerable publicity has been given to the long shoremen's trouble, with an "Independ ent organisation." and some of the statements in recent Issues of the press of Tortland are calculated to mislead anyone not familiar with the form of organization of the American Federa tion of Labor, of which the Longshore men's union 38-6 is a unit. The A. F. of L. has been given, by the unions which compose it, power to regulate and adjust Jurisdictional dis putes. One of the cardinal orinclnles is that no union or any member there- of. shall affiliate with a dual organlza lion. mis being true. the. ttemnt that the Independents are composed of members of other unions of the A. F. of is or mtie weight. The object of the American Federa tion of Labor is to organize all work ers, inererore, it must necessarily be democratic in form, else It could not survive. It is a movement In which force and violence has no part, and al leged rioting should be deprecated, and no doubt will he, by Longshoremen's '"o- me solidarity of the labor move ment, however, depends upon the char acter or the workers. Competency and temperance Is the demand of the times, so the union should have some say in the selection of Its members. When, as a result of falsa statement. made in advertising for men sometime ago, me city was flooded with idle men and the municipal government was compelled to provide work. It gave pref erence to citizens and men of family, jjunKMiuiremen s mo. 38-8 be crltl cised for doing likewise? K. J. STACK- Sec. Oregon State Federation of Labor. Journal Want Ads bring- results.
