Charles D. Flynn, s mining engineer,
has won his suit at. New York to re
cover I41I.26S from the King Edward
mining syndicate. He claimed that he
had discovered the ' company's silver
mines In the Cobalt region of Canada,
and that under an agreement he waa en
titled to 10 per cent of its profits.
The dead body of a beautiful woman
about 22 years of age waa found in her
room In a hotel at Missoula, Mont,
where she had registered aa "Mrs. John
Smith, Portland." Uer Hps were slight
ly burned, and she is thought to have
taken her own life. No papers were
found in her effects, which Included
a wedding ring, a bracelet and one cop
per cent . She had dark hair, gra y eyes
and clear complexion, and was well
dressed.
Pending determination of his appeal
for a new trial. Albert W. Freeman has
been released at -New Tork Friends

locate Margaret, Hawthorne, 28 years

000 left by David Shafter at Vassar,
Mich,; according to a. telegram from a
firm, at Hastings, Mich. Her parents
were Alml'na and Harry Hawthorne, who
separated shortly after her birth, and
she Is supposed to have been left, by

house steak, it la said, will sell for 26o
per pound against 85o for the American
beef. Tenderloin will sell for the same
prices.. Australian round steak will
bring 15o against 20o for American, and
prime roast 20c, compared with 28a
Tragic admission that he Is a former
convict and that he made the confession
voluntarily before the prosecution put
him in a wrong light was voiced In the
superior court at Oakland, Cat, by E.
L, B. Zlmmer, on trial on a charge of
having raised a receipt from $300, given
him by B. C. Collins, to SHOO. "But I
went to jail in Montana an innocent
man," shouted Zlmmer. "I ' was later
vindicated by the secretary of state
and other officials." Collins Is man
ager of the United Electtio company of
San Francisco, and Zlmmer is secretary
oft a vacuum cleaning company at Oak
land. Zlmmer saw a jailer from Mon
tana in court and admitted this prompt
ed hit .confession. He also charged that
Collins offered Saturday to withdraw
his charge If paid $500.
Investigation has been instituted
into the escape from the detention home
at Los Ankeles of five girls who Imme
diately organized an automobile party
to Redondo beach, where four of them
were recaptured by court officers. Ac
cording to the statement of the girls
tbey pried open a window grating with
table silver stolen from their dinner
trays. The four who were captured
were willing to return, but tbey refused
to give Information regarding the
whereabouts of Irene Heinzman', 14,
whom, the police are seeking. Evelyn
Quick, accuser of two men In the white
Slavery Investigation, in progress In
Los Angles, was confined with the glrla
at the Some. According to their decla
rations, the Quick girl refused to join
the party because she had no. money.
W. U. Sanderson, extensive prune
grower of Nyssa, Or., has added to his
holdings by the purchase of 160 acres
four miles north of Nyssa, from Robert
Van Ollse, mayor of that town, for $21,
000. Mr. Sanderson will set the land
to prunes and he ezpeots the output
this year to be more than doubled.
D. MoLaren Is held by the Aberdeen,
Wash polks for deportation to Peru as
an undesirable citizen. He claimed to
be an agent of ex-Oovernor Hay and his
brother, SI L Hay, for the oolonlzatlon
of land owned by the Hays In the state
of Tobasoo, Mexico, and through his
smooth talk victimised a number of
Aberdeen citizens who have vainly tried
to get their money back.
The city council of Baker, Or., has In
structed the recorder to serve notice on
the manager of the Coos Bay Telephone
company that he appear and explain
why the service Is so poor. The com
pany la now asking that a bonus of $5
be put up prior to installing a new in

Hiring of women of the lower class
as members of their "arson squads" Is
charged against militant suffragettes,
following the arrest at London of Nellie
Robinson, described as a servant She
was arrested outside the famous New
College Oapel at Hamstead and admit
ted, according to the police, that she
waa awaiting the arrival of two suffra
gettes, under whose direction she was
going to set fir to the church. When
the woman was brought before a police
magistrate she dryly remarked that she
"seemed to be in course of training a

Offers from 60,000 Japanese In Mex
ico to join In a" body the rebel troops
of General Venustlano Carransa and
others opposing the Huerta government,
are reported at Mexico City to have
been refused by the rebel ohiefs. - It is
reported that the Japanese will Join in
dividually. There are now about $000
Japanese fighting on each side in the
Mexican provinces. It was seral-offi-daily
annouooed at, Mexico City that a
loan of $160,000,000 to the Huerta gov
ernment is now assured. This money
will come partly from French bankers
and partly from the personal fortunes
of Felix Dies and Jose Limantour.

said to be his intention to resign so
soon as he possibly can after peace has
been restored, and to retire to Geneva,
where he lived for many years before

Twin Girls Accuse Argetsinger.
Eugene, Or., May 20. Being charged
with wronging twin girls, Alameda and
Alvada Mee, aged 18 years, of this city,
Harry Argetslnger of Albany, husband
of the woman who was brutally mis
treated by two men In that city a short
time ago, was bound over by Judge
Wells of the Eugene Justice court, yes
terday, and placed under $2000 bonds.
The offense is alleged to have been
committed while Argetslnger was work
