Mr. Goodman, however, ra f uaed, saying- that private business made it Impossible to devote the attention nee essary to the Port's business. Mr, Pendleton, who will probably be elected secretary at the June meeting-, was a member of the atata pilot commia. ,alon for two years, having been appoint' ed by Governor Benson, and from which he resigned in 1(11. He was also at one time a member of the board of trustees of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Pen dleton's election to the Port of Portland commislon was unanimous. j Tree Pookage Planned. v-a communication from Rear Admiral Iteynolda to the Chamber of commerce relative to pilotage and other matter in connection with the stay of the United States cruiser St. Louis in the harbor during the Rose Festival, June 9 to 14, Inclusive, was read to the commission, and it waa aeciaea to give her tna same advantages enjoyed by other warships that have coma here. Reports relative to the opposition pi lotage were brought up at the meeting and dlaoussed, the commission being in formed tbat the opposition had made a rate of 170 on the bar for the round trip from the sea to Astoria, and I2t0 from the sea to Portland and return. The matter was referred for Investigation to a committer of three, composed of Com missioners Pease, Shaver and O'Reilly, with the assistance of Qeneral Manager Talbot. May Buy Bar Tug, " Another committee, composed of Com missioners Inman, Hliaver and Spencer, waa appointed to look into the (patter of either building or. buying another bar tug to replace the tug Wallula, as It is said ahs will not be fit for bar service much longer and is In need of pew boil era. It was Intimated that one powerful enough to do outside towing during the slack summer months would be the most useful to the port Also the matter of feuiiding a steel hull towboat to replace the Ocklahama was referred to the com mittee for investigation. ' V ' A communication 'from the water board relative to having one of the dredges dig a trench for the Bull Run pipeline above the Hawthorne bridge was taken up, and Commissioner O'Reilly and General Manager Talbot appointed to take the matter up with the board. (United Presa Leaser1 Wtre.V . Seattle, Wash- May 9. That the rate war "on freight to lnteriorAlaska be tween the Northern Navigation com pan and the White Pass and n Yukon route will be extended to the passen ger business is indicated by the post, tlons now maintained by the two big corporations. The first class fare from Seattle to Fairbanks, via St. Michaels, already has been cut by the Northern NavU gation company from 1135 to $120, an the first class faro from Fairbanks lo Seattle has been reduced from $110 to $100. The White Pass company oper ates no steamboats to St. Michaels, and will have no interests in the rates by this routs other than the bearing t'.iey will have on the upper river rates, over which route both lines will operate pat sen ger Vessels. In the freight war between the two companies, which is Just in its Infancy, the White Pass company has placed It self under the Jurisdiction of the inter state commerce commission, which places it in the position where it wU have to file its rates with that body bet tore it can alter them. The Northern Navigation company, however, lias es caped that supervision. This will allow it to charge any rate it might be able to get on any one shipment. It is Strang? that a farmer will keep the good brooj mare from year to ypar and at the fsame time put his good brood sow into the fattening pen and send her off to market as soon as Bhe la fat enougrh to so. Thus, the good brood sow into- the fattening pen while the gilt, untried as a brood bow, takes her plate. Thid is a mistake. ' When a sow proves to be a good suckler and careful mother the should be retained, especially if she is prolific. With such a sow the farmer Is reason ably assured -of a strong; healthy litter of pigs that will grow into profitable hogs. A gilt may prove a good suckler, overlay her brood, while four or five is often the number of her1 brood. So with the young gilt for brood eow, the pig proposition on the farm is a very uncer tain one. . If a sow proves to be a good breeder from the, start aha should be retained, for it is reasonable to expect that she will get better each year.
