THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL', PORTLAND, THURSDAY EVENING, MAV e, IS a. hcl'ESS'lllEGGSIS .SOLBLYTHEV MCE .Ire In a Position lo Dictate Values at Present and Are DoJng It; Surplus (her Fresh Demand Must CJo Into Storage. v Today's Produce Trade, T.gga are uncnanged. Kmall broilers weaker. Cheese holds firm. Butter market steady." Asparagus rules easier. Strawberries are weak. . Cherry prices easier. , Wool buying retarded. ' Hop outlook better. ' M'hile victory in" the present Instance seems assured to the big Interests who are beating down the price of eggs here, it ts a very big question as to how long their methods will succeed. There is every present Indication that they will be able to force the price of eggs lower than at present, but there Is a like allowing that this victory will be ot short duration. i;gg market prices here are In reality the weakest along the Pacific, coast. There Is no excuse for this, as the pro duction Is really not so heavy as to cause disaster..! The situation is entire Iv the making of storage Interests and shippers and sellers are but pawns in the game. Neither Is in a position at the present time to help himself, for the storage Interests control the greater portion of the -present demand. The egg,, of which there is a surplus over freh consumptive demand, must even tually go- into storage. That Is the reason why the ice house Interests are o sure of their present position. ' Kven though there Is a strong proba- . : hllity- tuat-the ..price ot .eggs .will.' not, be weak for an extended period, caution must be used by country lBtereHts in making their shipments. Holdln-back ut supplies only aggravates the situa tion and furslshes fresh ammunition for the storage Interests when the sup piles eventually come forward, as they must. ' , - CHEESE SUPPLIES SHORT An extreme shortage of cheese Is shown In the- local market. Handlers are unable to secure sufficient stocks lor their Increasing orders. No change U shown in values but prices are very nrin. MORE CHERRIES ARRIVE Receipts of cherries from California are increasing and the bulk of the sales of best quality are being made at $1,8'J" per jo-pound box. Home duik siock is ai riving but this Is not meeting with an extensive demand. ASPARAGUS EASING OFF Market for asparagus Is somewhat easier with prices lower. Sales of tall Kre-n grass, were made yesterday up to 1 a dozen, but today the extreme top is SOc snd some sales are reported down to Tic for similar quality. SMALL BROILERS ARE WEAK While there is quite a fair demand for large sized broilers in the chicken market, supplies averaging around one pound each are hard to sell with the price lower generally. General chicken market "Is , slow at yesterday's quota tions. VEAL SLIGHTLY EASIER : While no general change was made in the: price of veal calves today, somi receivers reported shading prices about a half cent. Hales are being mado to day for best at 14'4g15c a pound. ... v Country killed hogs are firm at previ ous figures. .'.,',;.:-',.'.'.",; POOR STRAWBERRIES DRAG Rome Los Angeles strawberries which are said to have been held In storage here are showing a very poor demand owing to lack of suitable quality. Dol lars are slightly easier from $2.00 to $2.25 per la-pound crate but Jessies are weak with sales from $1.00 to $1.50 todav . . ,,.,,. ,., FORECAST FOR SHIPPERS Weather bureau sends the following notice' to shippers: Protect shipments as far north as Se attle against minimum temperatures of about 44 degrees: northeast to Spokane. 44 degrees: southeast to Boise, 40 de grees; south to Siskiyou. 36 degrees. IK Or HOUSE INTERESTS BREWERS NOT MUCH El Any Considerable Demand for Old Stock Would Dull Market for Contracts and This Is What Deer Men Would Avoid. Hop conditions are extremely Quiet at all world's centers. There seems to be little Inclination among brewing Inter lestx or the United Htates to take on additional supplies except when shnded vhiups are inuicateo, nut rew noiuers are willing to concede anything at the moment Further Increases are shown in the consumption of beer in the United States and the outlook for the hop trada solely on this Bcore, is somewhat better, al though brewlsg interesis are not show ing their hand to any extent. For March the internal' revenue department shows beer sales of the United States at 4.731.031 barrels compared with 4.333. 7)8 barrels for the same month Id 1912, an increase or 3 7.3 13 barrels. The Increase in the output of beer at roreign points is correspondingly in creased and with stocks of old hopa ex ceedingly light tha outlook is somewhat improved. One real reason for the present stag nation and dullness in tne spot hop trade Is the smal amount or stocK avail able. The holdings are so limited that brewing ntorests have come to the con clusion that they had better keep their nanos off so as to Keep the price or contracts to a low oasis. Any consul' erable demand indicated at thlH time for spot goods would have a bullish effect unon contract delivery. A late ew Torn mall advice sava or th genera situation: Bales. S. REPORT IS BEARISH Chicago Starts With Rise but Closes With a Net Loss for the Session Today. Chicago, aray 8. -The government crop report today showing the condition of winter wheat at 91.9 per cent gave tlie market a bearish session with a closing loss of 14 to a bushel. ' , - There was a small display of bullish ness at -the opening and both May and lulv were mirier, but this was the h th mark for'the day and selling pressure soon followed, Broomtiall cabled from Liverpool that yesterday's strength in America and steadiness in Winnipeg caused moder ate covering at the opening and values were d higher. Following the opening, May declined va with lack or support, while July and October advanced Vs- to ?d on expectations of small Argentina shipments. Manitoba offers were firmer with a somewhat improved demand rrom the continent. The advance was checked byi expectation of a bearish American government report. Jill INTERESTS NOi CONTROLLING FLEECE E Holding Purchases Down to Mini mum in Order to Influence Price in .til American Markets; Foreign Situation Is Strong. My Hyman If. Cohen. Continued depression Is being; forced In the wool and mohair trade by eastern mill interests, who seem determined opon their course of forcing American sheep Owners to bow to their will. . Purchases of wool are being held back, to the last notch in an effort to force additional dullness and subsequent weakness inx the trade. Sales of -wool at coast centers' have been unusually light for this period of the year; in fact, at some Pacific northwest points there has not been a sufficient amount of business passing recently to firmly es tablish, quotations. , This weakness is shown In the face of the fact that late advices from the east indicate that buying orders for clothing for fall delivery are up to tho average, and that prices paid are show ing practically no change from those made previous tn the beating down of fleece values. The weakness In the wool trade is not confined to the Pacific, slope, but is general throughout the country. Latest advices from London are to the effect that the wool trade there Is firm at full prices formerly paid. At a late ' sale there of 13.304 bales, which consisted principally of cross-breeds, trading was excellent, tha lots lelng quickly sold to the home trade and the continent at firm prices.
