(United Press lMd Wlre.1 New York. April 23. Mrs. O. II. P. Belmont today Is en route for Europe to attend th$ National Woman Suffrage convention in Budapest, but in the midst of her preparatlons'ihe prepared a state ment lor. the United .Press, taking issue ivith'MIss Irtea Mulholland as to the opposition o the Catholic church toward ciiual rights for women, Mrs. Belmont quoted Archbishop Kean as favorlrfz equal suffrage. - By Mrs. O. II. I'. Belmont. 1 , - My observation Jg that the Roman Cathql'c church has put Itself on record as 'belngf' opposed to worwm suffrage, but distinctly emphasizes . the fact that Jts attitude is entirely- neutral. Tfio Catholic church, like the churches of every other denomination, stands for conservatism, but the wildest imagina tion could not claim this to be any more peculiarity of one church than an other. ; ;;.. v" Krom the standpoint of religion, the Catholln Hmrrh anil nil nlhm rhunhu leave the question of woman suffrage absolutely alone, and It la unjust and unfair to criticise any , church on the ground that some of Its members and leadors, as individuals, oppose the prin ciple. In this connection. It is interest ing to know ... that today the Catholic Woman Suffrage association held a pub lie meeting in one of the largest Cath olic churches In New York, at the in vitation of thn naslar. Gibbons Oppose! Suffrage. While it Is true that Cardinal Gibbons, a most conservative nian, quite frankly denounces the equal suffrage movement, on the other ; hand the late Cardinal Slofah of "Australia, "having the advan tage of observing Its beneficial effects in his own country during a period of 13 years, upheld it on all occasions, his favorite remark on the subject being: "The woman who thinks she is making herself-unwomanly by voting is a eitiy i-reature." While the bishop, of! New York may be opposed to suffrage, the bishop of California 1a in favor of it. Archbishop ICeane sends the following message: . "From my large experience as a bishop of the Catholic church in Wyo ming, where we have had woman suf frage for 13 years, I have never known hut one woman who made herself ob noxious in politics. As to the Catholic women In my diocese, I do not think that the right of suffrage has drawn them cither out of their homes ori out or me cmircp. i mm mere in-eu ue no fear of thai result." - Prlesti Favor It la California, In California some of the most ac tive worker for woman suffrage were Catholic priests. ..?',IncldentaUy it might be mentioned that the president of the Church J.eeeoeflior woman suurage, wnicn aia sunf effective work in California during the suffrage campaign. Was a prpmi npnt,Lwmher, i)f the Catholic churdL. - York priest, uums up the attitude of his church on the subject by saying: "Frankly, I don't see why the whole matter has not been settled long since by St. Paul when he declared there was 'Let It Go" ,'H1 - ii if your liat blows off and it be longs to the old styles, come liere-and get a new and stylish 'lid'' that will, reflect credit on' ""our work and your selection and good taste. In an interview,-Mrs. Belmont predicted that militant methods might have to be adopted in this country before ' the ballot is gained. . , "Men have never won their freedom without shedding blood," she said, ''and women will not get theirs without fighting." BARKEEPER USES BEER GLASS ON PATRON'S FACE W. E. Rose, bartender at 287 Russell street, was arrested last, night on a charge of knocking out the left eye of Frank Klrak, 305 Eugene street.' It is charged that Rose struck Klink with a beer glass, breakfhg the latter's nose, cutting a deep gash on the' cheek and entirely destroying the sight of the eye. According to Klink, Rose assaulted him in a quarrel over a game orcftras; which they had been playing 1 the saloon.
