Evelyn Arthur See has begun to serve
an Indeterminate sentence of one to five
years in the Illinois penitentiary, after

followers.
Mrs. John Miller Horton, the unsuc
cessful candidate for president general

Nathan D. Raymond, a pioneer of
Clatsop county, died at Astoria, Or., yes
terday as the result of a partial stroke
of paralysis. Mr. Raymond was born
on tha family homstead at Clatsop
Plalna in 1850. He was a well known
civil engineer.
A Chinese named Leo Sen died at
Baker, Or., yesterday from drinking too
much tea. He had been alck with, pneu
monia and was released from the hos
pital. He would since eat nothing, and
would drink nothing -but tea. '
Eight or ten heads of departments of
the University of Idaho at Moscow will
be asked to resign as the result of a
general house cleaning Just completed
by the board of regents. Some of these
men have been with the university for
many years. , Their names are withheld.

to securing a Sunday train service on
the Condon branch of the O.-W. R. & N.
By holding him to answer on the
charge of submitting a 'false statement
regarding his corporation's finances and

Deasy has practically assured the trial
of William Corbln, secretary of the Con
tinental Building aY Loan society of
San Francisco. The charge waa pre
ferred by Bute Building and Loan Com
missioner Walker, who bad to forcibly
break Into Corbln's office In order to
gain desired evidence against his cor

Literally out to pieces when the auto
mobile In which he was riding collided
with a trolley car near her, J. C. Arnold,
a civil engineer of Martinea. Cat, Is
dead at Richmond, CaX Floyd Breme
man, George Upham and Leo Tomey,
who were in the machine with 'Arnold,
were severely injured. The car climbed
on top of the automobile, pinning Arnold
and throwing the others tQ one Side.

assembly yesterday passed the Suther
land proposed constitutional amendment
giving the state railroad commission
power to fix the compensation to be
paid for any public service corporation
ur uwmy uen uver uy municipalities
under eminent domain proceedings. The
amendment waa Introduced at . the re
quest of the city attorney's office in Han
Francisco and was designed to apply to
the condemnation of the Spring Valley
Water company in the event'of its ac
quisition through this meansJy the city.
Arrested at Oakland, ., Cal., while at
tempting to force Mrs. Florence Pand
redge, a young Regress, to elope with
him, at the point of a gun, Wellesley
Warner, a negro, recently paroled from
Folsom penitentiary, where he had been
given 20 years for the murder of his
mother, . probably will be returned . to
prison. The negresa is a domestic in
the home of J. W. Stevens. The Stevens
family was aroused by Warner's at
tempts to kidnap the girl and had him
arrested.
Charged with using the mails to da
fraud, Mrs.' May Clark, 4S, Is held at
Los. Angeles for the action of the fed
eral grand Jury. According to the fed
eral authorities, Mrs. Clark, who is
dark and has dark eyes and black hair
streaked with gray, won the heart of J.
T. Kelly, a rancher, by representing her
self to be a, young woman with brown
hair and blue eyes. After an exchange
of letters,, Kelly proposed and was ac
cepted by mail. On the appointed day
Kelly was left "waiting at the church."
Mrs, Clark was arrested in Beaumont,
Texas, and brought west for trial

litigation 14 head of horses sold to them
which- are alleged to have been stolen a
year ago from the Yakima reservation.

voted by a large majority to cut down

man walked into a doctor's office to be
examined for life insurance. He had six
gunshot wounds on his body, and when
asked how they ' occurred, quietly re

After being pardoned he became a lead
ing lawyer of Oklahoma,
Senator Ashurat of Atixona has intro
duced at Washington a bill to refuse
the use of the malls to brokers who

The people of Astoria, Or., art de
manding a publio dock not less than

Prevent Even a Hearing on

Telephone eV Telegraph company has
filed a vigorous protest against the rail,
road commission holding a hearing on
tha complaint of tha Wright-Dlokinaon
Hotel company, proprietors cf tha Ore
gon hotel in Portland, Tha hotel has
the Home Telephone . company's tele
phones in all its rooms and it wants the
Pacific Telephone company to switch
calls coming over Its lines for patrons
of the hotel to tha Home Telephono
company's switchboard.
In Its protest the Pacific Telephone
company, alleges that the commission
Ls without Jurisdiction as the telephone
company's service Is ' interstate. The
company saya its system covers Califor
nia, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and
the western portion of Idaho, serving
over 600,000 subscribers, ' and that the
company has a rule against connecting
with, any lines or apparatus not fur
nished by it or under Its control.
The answer alleges that such an order
would be unjust, In violation of law;
and an Interference with -the company
in tha control of Its own property It
asserts that such connections would de
prive the company of Its profits and
would give all the advantage to the
Home Telephone. company.

Desert Land Board Calls on It
to Answer Demand of Set

Salem, Or., April 22. The state desert
land board, at a meeting yesterday afternoon,-
passed a' resolution requesting
the Central Oregon Irrigating company
to appear within 15 daya and show
cause, If any, why the board should not
begin action on the- company's bond to
compel it to comply with its contract
with the state. This contract calls for
the enlargement of the central Oregon
canal to a capaolty to serve all the land
sold in the .Powell Butte district In
Crook county.
This was the third meeting held by
the board in tha last few weeks to con
sider this matter. E, B. Williams, one
of the land owners In the Powell Butte
district, has appeared before the board
at each meeting and made demands that
the board compel the company to live
up to Its contract
On complaint of Mr. Williams that
tha company was expending the money
ljt collected for maintenance of the Irri
gation system ror new extension worg,
the board also passed an order request
ing the company to submit to the board
a. sworn statement of its handling of
tha maintenance fund for last year.

trustee through whos handa the con
