'.yr 'V It has recently been announced that Miss Lucy Powell, formerly of Portland, has won the Earle prize In classics at Barnard college, New York, city., The prise la 150, established in memory of Mortimer Lamson Earle, '.who was in. structor In Greek, in Barnard college from 1881 to 1895,. and from 1S9S to 1900, and professor of classical philo logy from 1900 to 1905. The competi tion Is open annually to all candidates of Barnard, and Columbia colleges for tha Bachelor of Arts ' degree. It Is awarded partly on the basis of the reg ular work of the year in Greek and Latin, and partly on the baBls of a series of examinations just held. During the past six years it has been four times won by a Barnard student , Miss Powell, the successful competitor this year, la a graduate of SU Helen's nail, port land, where she received all her college preparatory training, and entered Bar nard college as a junior, on the St Helen's hall certificate, In 1911. The members of the union, In' a mass meeting held in the home yesterday afternoon, decided to organise a system which will take In every business house and manufacturing concern in the city in the campaign for funds. Enough women hava already signified their intentions of doing this work. The city will be divided Into districts.
