The fact that conditions elsewhere are' rather steady, with prices in some instances higher, leads to the conclusion that prices nave about struck the low level, and might possibly do better here unless shippers continue to overfeed the trade. At Chicago there was a firmer tone In the hog trade, with an advance of a nickel ui the price. Tops went to 17.85 again. Run for the day was 17,000 head, compared with 27.000 a rear ago. Kansas City hog market was also firmer, with an advance of 80 for the day. Tops reached 37.30. At South Omaha there was a steady trade in the hog yards, with tops at 37.15. Hog shippers today: B. R. Special ad vices received by The Journal from its correspondents as well as through pri vate sources, are conflicting. Home reports Indicate tnat stations that have been liberal shippers of tur keys to the Portland market in other seasons, will not have enough for their pwn requirements. On the other hand other reports, and from the same places, indicate tnat foruana win get irora there a greater supdy than usual, be cause the larger per cent ot the birds were 100 poor to snip ror me Tnanas- gtving trade and were therefore held over for fattening. The general opinion seems to be that there will be fully 5 per cent more birds In the Portland and Seattle mar kets than last Christmas. This estimate included stocks held In storage from Thanksgiving. " Heattle advices still are of a very unfavorable trend with no indication ot any quantity moving above 22c a pound and with the prospects of the bulk ot the birds not reaching above 20c. A mall advice from Ban Francisco Bays that the - receipts of -dressed turkeys were light, but receivers were not able to aavance prices, owing to unfavor able weather and no demand from the holiday trade -except from parties hav ing refrigerators and those willing to take chances by putting in cold storage. The price at which they sold was 20c to 22c a pound for choice to fancy. Low er graaes soia ror less money. In the Portland market sales .of ex tra select birds are reported in a very limited way at 22o a pound, but not enough stock Is moving to base an ac curate Quotation. Receipts are begin nlng to show an Increase. The bulk of the stock for tbe Christmas trade will arrive Sunday. Talk of Government Investigation Sends Metal Shares Higher. New York, Deo. 13.
