..The board of state game and fish
commissioners, In session yesterday, de
cided to ask the stat legislature nest
i month to remove the license fee that Is
required now In the . catching and sell-
tiR of smeltj iit'the recommendation of
Master Fish Warden B. K. Clanton.
t JL'nder the present system the smelt, the
! most plentiful of fish. Is high priced
f Jerause of this license fee On their sale
The smelt ran in millions every year
knd there has -been no appreciable dl
V mlnutlon in their supply. In the opln
tOnn of Mr. Clanton, their price should
2 never be over S cents a pound. - .:
' The board spent most of the day -yes
terday In considering changes to be
2 triad a In the commercial fish laws..' One
(f the important revisions considered Is
., 40 Increase the license on the packers
' jui4 fish dealers as well as the owners
M stationary gear, such; as tho fish
wheels. All the members of the board
are in favor of this and a recommenda
! tion to that effect will be made to the
, aglslature, -h:j ..V,
The proposition" of placing a trout
. Witchery on Spring creek In Klamath
' county, ,' which . was abandoned by the
, fhh commission after It had been con
sfdered some time ago, has been taken
ytp again, and this time, stands a good
aoce or going through. Irvine w.
Alison, chief fish culturlst, returned
yesterday from a week's trip In the
Klamath country, where he Investigated
fOthorv. attest for a i trout hatchery and
the present conditions there,
The original' si to for this hatchery,
"upon which the board decided, . Is SO
Jipiles from Klamath Falls. The spot
'Is the most desirable on the government
! .reservation, and It had been previously
isurveyed by the federal department as
i a water power site. The government
trefused to turn It over to the state for
: Jtlie purpose proposed, and the commis
' -ilon had to let the. matter drop. ;Th
! 'government , recently decided that It
t i was unsuitable for their purpose, and
f '.the state therefore stands a good chance
of obtaining it again, .
Want Trout Season Change.
" The board authorized the expenditure
of 500 from the state funds for the
construction of . a : f lshway over 1 4he
rocky formation in Hood River known
as the ."PunchbowL Sportsmen and
the Commercial club of Hood River
have already raised 1350 to be used for
this purpose, and in clearing out a dam
at the mouth of the river which pre
vents the stream from flowing Into the
Columbia in its natural course. When
both of these improvements have been
completed, re-Jents of the Hood River
country hope to see fish in the stream
become plentiful again.
, A committee from the Multnomah An
glers' club appeared before the com
Tnlsslon with regard to contemplated
changes in the' open season for trout
risning. The committee asked for a
winter trout fishing season below tide
water. ? The recommendation will be
made to the legislature that this be
considered In the revision of th,e fish
and game laws this winter. '
Representatives of fishermen on Til
lamook Bay and Nehalem also appeared
before the board and asked that changes
be made In the location of the fishing
dead lines. A request also came from
Tillamook that the Trask river salmon
hatchery, near that bay, be moved over
to the Wilson river, a few miles dis
tant. Both the Trask and the Wilson
flow into Tillamook bay.
will be. submitted to the legislature at
its session this winter. Among the
street wldenlngs proposed by the Great
er Portland plan is that of JBuxnside
from 60 to 110 feet, this street being
considered as the axial traffic artery
of the greater ' lty. Present at the
meeting last night were Arthur Lang
guth. Richard WTMontague, J. B. Leber.
R, O. Brand. George A. Carter. The
Installation dinner and regular monthly
meeting of the .association are tQ be
held tomorrow -evening in the Commer
cial club small dining room.
ASK ADVICE ON NEW
BUILDING STATUTES
Following up their refusal to obey the
Instructions of the city building inspec
tor's office and reconstruct the doors
of the courthouse to swing outward Into
the corridors, the county, commissioners
yesterday asked .District Attorney-elect
Walter Evans for his opinion as
to what extent the state building code
applies to the outside and v. vestibule
doors of the building. The doors of the
main entrance, -. which are ornamental,
Are sliding doors and are never closed
save when the building is empty. The
state law call for, outside doors swung

A letter was forwarded to Superin
tendent I H. Baker of the detention
home asking him to send written ex
planations concerning several -items
contained in a bill for the construction
of a cesspool, a - The commissioners
deemed the items in question as exces

; A warrant for $50 was drawn In fa
vor of the .Oregon "Poultry and Pet
Stock association. The money was do
nated by the county to encourage chil

the association to children as prizes for
