MAKES PLEA FOR HELP III IU1B HOSPITAL DEBT Bishop Charles Scadding Calls Attention to Financial Con ditions at G6od Samaritan; Asks Thanksgiving GiftsaC !''.: Charles Scadding, bishop of the Ore gon Episcopal church,' , has issued a statement, asking that - Thanksgiving offerings-be made to the GoodSamari tan hospital. The statement cites the fact that the hospital is still under a large Indebtedness and that outside help is necessary in clearing this Off, The statement follows: . 1 i As, a result of the bounty of nature of the confidence of investors, of the partiality : of emigrants 1 f rom . other states and countries, Oregon Is bounding zorward on the path of prosperity. Is there another state in which ao large a proportion of the people live in plenty and in the enjoyment, of .comforts of modern improvements, in general Im munity, from disease, and in the bless ings or peace? Are inese ravors or Providence v11'"" us - more ; humbly thankful, mora " thoughtful for others, more attentive to our duty, and more careful to make our lives a worthy ex ample? Or are they making us forget ful of everything but ourselves? Are they hardening? our hearts and fostering W us habits of seir-lnduigenceTt ; ! Makes Plea for Aid. Progress that is merely material, that has - no spiritual counterpart in the hearts of the. people to whom it comes,, cannot be enduring progress, and Is likely to be followed by ruinous reaction. Oregon will be a great state, great in every sense of the word, and especially in the most important sense, if her people so think and live as to keep themselves proof against the- cor rupting influence of mere money-mak ing. On Thanksgiving day we have one chief outlet for the spirit of thanks giving open to all citizens of Oregon, and especially residents in Portland, and that is the Good Samaritan hos pital. - '.-',- "This hospital has a record of which any city might well be proud. It has been liberally aided by churchmen, and patronized by the sick and suffering of all nationalities, and of all denom inations. It is uneeetarlan. and, as far at It can, cheerfully opens Its doors, and gives of its best to all needy sick peo ple. The, larger support It gets from outside contributions and from patients who are able to pay, the more charity work It Is. able to do. It needs at present are pressing and are as follows: Urgent Heeds Enumerated. "Balanceof Indebtedness on the Bishop Morris memorial wing, $16,000. This la being gradually reduced by the earn ings of the hospital. It should" be paid by outside contributions. "Indebtedness for balance due on street Improvement under bond, about $7500. "A maternity annex to be placed on vacant lots next nurses' home. The present ward set aside for this purpose is quite inadequate. "The main building Is seriously crip pled without -an elevator. This will cost about $3000. "More endowed beds. : Five thousand dollars will endow a bed. What better thank-offering can one make than to provide such endowmentsT "Contributions may be placed In the offertory plate or forwarded to Dr. S. E. Joseph!, treasurer, 610 Dekum building, Portland. : '- - ; "I earnestly appeal to churchmen in Oregon, and especially to citizens in Portland, whether members of the Episcopal church or not-lo -glva a . 11b eral thank-offering to this general hos pital.
