Seattle, Wash-, Oct. 30. "If the peo

harmoniously with ma,-1 pladge them
that we will cut the expenditures of tho
state government at least $1,000,000
and It is my honest opinion that $$,000,.
000 can be saved." said Ernest Lister,
Democratic candidate for governor.
"Ten years ago the amount of reve
nue raised fo u"n the affairs of the
state of Washington was $2,399,89$.
Last year It was $7,762,463. While the
expense of running the state increased
almost $00 per cent, the population In
creased only 2 2 1, per cent; This differ
ence, in my opinion, )ias been due al
most entirely to the extravagance and
reckless use of the people's money by
Governor Hay and his appointees.
"Tbe state capitol board, of which
Governor Hay is chairman, baa already
spent the $200,000 appropriated by the
legislature for the erection of a Temple
of Justice at Olympta, sad not even
the stone facing, the rnoct expensive
part of any building, Is included In the
present contracts. It wlil take at the
lowest estimate an additional $800,000
to complete the building. At this rate,
and . with this 1)uslns' system, the
eapltol buildings wiU cost tbe state
from six to twelve millions and all
above four millions, the- value of the
capitol land, will come from the pockets
of the taxpayerar
"In addition to lessening the number
of commissions and to staying within
the limit set by the legislature In the
construction of buildings, I will put into

methods that any business . man puts
