The bar was rough and on her wajr-out she struck, heavily at-a point nearly north of the-etty and her rud ;X o'er and rudder poet were Jerked out .and her garboard strakes were torn out on the- starboard aide. The "port lifeboat was smashed, and her cargo chain snapped- one after the other. :h The deck- load went over the side and V adrift with every roll of the sea. The tug boat Goliath brought the disabled vessel into port at 5 o'clock this afternoon. The Freeman hang so low in water aft and la so sharply listed to star board as to hide all traces of the dam age, the extent of which cannot be known until she is drydoeked. While the company is not now en gaged in the operation of steamships except under charter, it is understood that if proper encouragment la given. It would probably place in commission four or more large steamers between Portland and Japanese ports. Japanese lines are operated out of Tacoma, 8e- attle and San Francisco, and Portland la looked upon as a very promising . field. . M. S. DOLLAR, DUE British Steamer to Arrive at Kalama s for Lumber. The British steamer M. 8. Dollar is due to arrive at Kalama tonight or to morrow morning from Coos Bay where she took on a part cargo of lumber for Shanghai. The steamer lsft Coos Bay yesterday with Captain W. B. Olson, master of the steamer Nan Smith, as pilot. Captain Olson will go to Wilm ington. Del., to bring out a new steamer Just completed there for the C. A. Smith Lumber company of Marshf iold, which owns the Nann Smith. The M. S. Dollar will fill out her car go of about 3,('OO,0OOfeet at the mill of the Mountain Timber company. The British steamer Robert Dollar Is due to arrive in the river in a few days to load logs and lumber for Nhanghal. y the P he lumbe Shanghai. Cleeton, of Portland, to whom had fallen the hmor 0f deliv ering the address at the ceremonies. It Is hoped to have everything in shape for a trial trip in a few weeks, large Coast Vessel. The vessel will be the largest of the fleet, her dimensions being: Length, 215 feet; beam, 41 feetr depth of hold, 14 feet. She will have capacity for carrying t.flOO.oeo feet of-lumber and will have commodious accommodations for 60 cabin passengers. She will be engaged In the trade between the Co lumbia river and California ports, car rying lumber south and general cargo north.
