Senator Bourns has been Informed by . Commissioner George R. Though the ' practice will be to charge the buoy - every four months, there have been In stances where the buoys have run a year Without recharging. The placing of these buoys, which will be of great aid to shipping at the mouth of the river, has been at the in sistent request of Senator Bourne, based upon statements from shipping men as " to the desirability of this Improvement. Senator Bourne also had a conference , with Commissioner Putnam regarding the erection of a lighthouse at the outer end of Jhe Columbia river Jetty, either " at the extreme end or on the last groin nd. Commissioner Putnam's investiga tion of the situation show that the erection of a lighthouse at that point will be a very expensive undertaking, wine- to the great flow of water. In order to provide an adequate foundation It would be necessary to construct what - would be practically an Island In the ocean, with a diameter of 1500 feet, and . the total cost would be In the neighbor hood of $1,000,000. Nothing can be done In the matte until the chief of engin eers has prepared plans and estimates, which Senator Bourne will request be 'done. Commissioner Putnam mad his tudy of the situation at the request of Senator Bourne and concurs as to the desirability' of erecting the lighthouse If It can be done and the necessary ap propriation secured. SIX COAbTERS COMING Among Thorn Is the Lyra, With a Large Cargo. .Among the six coasters that sailed from San Francisco yesterday for Port land vu the American-Hawaiian steam er Lyra, Captain Knight, which Is on her way here from Sallna Crus, via San ni.ov, and the Golden Gate. She is bringing 750 ton" of domestic cargo and j will be due to arrive here Monday night. For her outward cargo she will have at least 850 tons of cargo for New York. In addition to this she will have 200 tons of flour for Central America and SO tons Of cascara bark for Europe. On Jher last voyage out of here, leaving lAugust 12, the cargo of the Lyra reached New York In less than a month this being considered remarkably quick time The cargo arrived on September 10, according to advices received at the local Office of the company, making the voyage from here, via 8an Franolsco "and the isthmus of Tehuantepee, In 29 days. It was also an unusually large cargo, consisting of 1100 tons of gen eral freight. - The steamer 'Camino was .among the roasters to sail yesterday and will ar rive here with 8200 tons of cement. It Is said that there Is more wheat here awaiting shipment to California on the Camino than the vessel can carry. The George W. Elder. Fairhaven, Aurelia and jF. S. Loop also sailed for Portland yes terday. WHEAT CARGO COMPLETE British Bark Killarney Will Shift From Docks to Stream Today. Wheat loading on the British bark Killarney, Captain Brown, having been finished, she will shift from the Ele vator docks to the stream today. She Is under charter to the Portland Flour ing Mills company and she will sail from here for the United Kingdom with 77,798 bushels of wheat, valued at $63, '794. 6he is expected to leave down for the sea about Monday. They arrived at about the same them from the West Coast. SCHOONER BRINGS CEMENT Temple E. Dorr Arrives With New Skipper and Mates. With a new set of officers aboard, the steam schooner Temple E. Dorr ar rived at 4 o'clock this morning from Ban Francisco with 460 tons of general merchandise and 300 tons of cement. The Dorr is now In command of Captain tA. W. Captain Nygren was here last about four years ago in the steamer J - Marhoffer, of which he superintended the construction. After discharging her cargo for the JEX, J. Dodge company at Oak street dock, the Dorr will load grain at one of the local docks and finish with lum ber on deck at Wauna for San Pedro.
