Gov ernor Hndley, of Missouri, who had act ed as floor lesder of the fight, was urging strongly that no decisive step ' if tnken until Hll this had been done. liut word had coma to the Koossvelt headquarters that Governor Hadley had been In a midnight conference with t'harles V. Fairbanks and others of ths opposition. Inspired Btorlea had gone lo eastern rP"rs that Hsdley was to be picked up by the Taft people as a daik horso candidate. Hsdley Asksd to Tix Stand. When Governor Hadley reached Colo nel Roosevelt's room soon after Colo nel Roosevelt had read his announce ment, ho was asked to make clear his jioiiltlon and w hat he proponed to do In case the convention seated the oonteflt d delegates. Ha said lio would fight the roll up to tho end of the parliament ary ruling and therv would take Buch a course as he might think best. He would not promise to repudiate the con vention by a bolt or to refuse a nom ination at its hands. 8oon after the conference Hadley quietly left and did not returrf. Among the Roosevelt supporters a sharp dif ference of opinion was early developed. On the one side a group of radicals. Jieadod by Governor Johnson, of Califor nia; George L. Record, of New Jersey; the Plnchots, James ft. Garfield and action regardless uf party regnVarity action which would of necessity start the new party. Opposed to these, and at the other extreme. Were men like who refused to deserc the regular party. Delegates Opposed to Bolt. Ths delegates themselves, even Jn states which were carried by strong primary votes for Roosevelt, were In many Instances opposed to any bolt, and the pressure from this quarter was tre mendous to prevent the party brealc. This Idea was expressed by Victor Mur dock, of Kansas, an unquestioned radical and eager follower of Roosevelt.
