I would rather take the word of Harry New and men like, lilrn." "Sham on such contests.'' he con tinued. "They were paper contests any- j way." I Expected Only One Contest. ! Hemenway turned the lauRh on the ' Roosevelt forces. rppeatlnK Colonul . ICoosevelt's statement that, despite the ' number of contests filed from Alabama. ; he only expected to win one. I "Tho others were paper contests," he shouted, to (rive certain people a chance to yell 'Fraud, fraud." where there was' no fraud." Hemenway then ass.Trled I Cecil l.vnn, for, ho said, "driving away five-sixths of the Kepubllcuns of Texas." "What he wants," Hemenway declared, "Is to reduce the Republican party In Texas only to office holders, so that ha can perpetuate his own control." Chargres Lyon Used Srand Hemenway insisted that Lyon voted counties In his state) In which there was not a sinplo Republican vote. "I. yon can" no loiiRer work his frauds on the-Republican nutlonnl committee, Bald Hemenway. Kllnn shouted: "How about Penrose?' "I'll answer you," said Hemenway. "Y'ou ask about Penrose. Well, I'll tell you straight It's Penrose above Flinn every time." This assertion started another storm. "If tho gentleman, from Pennsylvania wants an honest hearing of his charges and his statements,' Bald Hoot In Re hukliift Kllnn, "he will conduct the pro- ceeainfis in an orderly manner. Flinn Stands JXls Ground. Root pounded for order, but Flinn In sisted on recognition. Snatching a moc- apliono from a delegate, he shouted: T rise to a point of order. The gen tleman from Indiana Is not speaking- to the queBtlon. V Root did not hesitate a second. Point ing tho gavel to the Pennsylvania!!, he iclared-., "Tho gcnllemart will take hi seat" Flinn stood his ground. Smashing the table again and again with his gavel. Root answered: Tho point of order 1b not well taken. The gentleman from Pennsylvania will take his seat. When quiet Is restored the gentleman from Indiana will re- stime." Flinn sat down. Ends Argument Amidst Noise. Hemenway ended his argument amitist rival cheers and boos from the two fac tions. CJeorge Record of New Jersey argued for the Hadley motion, discussing the Arizona and Indiana cases. In the Ari zona case he repeated the argument he made personal before the national com mittee, claiming that the Taft conven tion was a rump one, while the Roose velt convention was the only legal one. fda La Follette, daughter of the Wisconsin senator, and her husband, George Mlddleton, took advantage of the Record argument to empty a quart bottle of milk which 'Mrs Mlddleton had brought in with her. At the same time they munched crackers which Mrs. Mld dleton also brought along. Record could Hardly be heard because of the movement of the delegates and audience and Root came to his assist ance. .- Summing up his ' argument. Record said: The issue between us is clear. We desire to .submit the question to the party voters. The opposition desires to submit this to a closed room where only hand picked delegates can partici pate. It is siHvpiy in a nutshell whether the bosses or the people shall rule," Record held that ho slate where a contest was filed should be! represented on the credentials committee. By per mitting them to be represented, be said, fraud would be perpetrated.
