There Is abundant evidence of an enormous protest at the polls, even if no ticket Is put In tha field by the antl-Koosevelt Republicans. DIXON PRIVATELY ADMITS T. R. HAS NO CHANCE TO WIN (Continued from Page One.) might just as wall agre to tak tha party Into a back alley and cut Its throut," I'ixon declared. 'The whole program of the Taft supporters Is to get delegates, regardless of the wishes of the voters In the districts which these delegates represent. They are now urging tha national committee on to revolution ary measures which would sound tha death knell of the party. "No sane mun or sober bellevea that President Taft if nominated could carry three Republican Btatos." Dixon's statement asserted further that If President Taft Is nominated "there will not bo enough of th party left in congress to demand a vote of the ayes and nays.' It would mean a crush ing defeat to both country and state tickets in nearly every state in the union." The revised list of delegates before the national committee today shows that 250 'of the 1078 delegates to the na tional convention are contested, includ ing two from California, and 14 from Washlngqton. Several members of the national com mittee, Including Committeeman Scott of West Virginia, sent proxies to the meeting, not wishing to participate tn the contest between Roosevelt and Taft. Colonel Has Wo Chance. Ormaby McHarg, tha New York at torney who Is handling the Roosevelt interests in 4,he contested cases, de nounced, a story published today that the national committee Is planning to seat two thirds of tho Taft delegates and one third of the Roosevelt dele gates, in the 250 contest cases. The Taft committeemen ridiculed the story, emphatically asserting- that President Teft will win practically every contest. Senator Dixon, manager of the Roose velt bureau, privately admitted that the colonel has no chance before the na tional committee. Dixon declared that he had received a committeeman a proxy by telegraph but that he would not UB6; It. "I would rather be licked than be forced to enter the committee and make 1 a spectacle of myself," was Dixon's emphatic , comment. " . . Manager McKinley or the Taft Dureau issued a statement today in defense of Senator Root, in which he reviewed the career of th slated temporary chair man. Tha statement denounced Colonel Roosevelt's attitude toward William H. Barnes, the New York Republican lead er, and concluded: Slioi linn Bttmnt. "The fact is, Roosevelt has changed and' with this change ha come disloy alty to friendship, and treason to party." Later in tha day Senator Dixon Issued a statement in which h denounced the Taft committeemen , who had declared they wouldaeat practically tha Taft contestants.
