Leaving home at 1 o'clock in the Business for American-Made ' Auto in Great Britain Pick - ing Up Rapidly. 6. G. Bennet, General Motors conv pany, who has Just returned from a Eu ropean trip, speaks Interestingly of the progress made by American companies in exploiting their product In England and other foreign countries. 'There has been ao much optimistic talk of ltae," he lays, "In regard to our export trade In motor cars that It la time the conditions a "they exist should be known. It Is true that the number of cars shipped from here is steadily Increasing, but analysis of tha situation develops that our Increase In buslnesa during the past few months has been mostly with England. The careless Indifference on the part of the American manufacturer to the English market during the past few years, seems to have been supplanted uy a wua rusn ror business In that country. In consequence, the pendulum bas swung so far In the other direc tion that aa much harm may bs done o imnrran -iraue aunng tne next lew monthe by the over-stocking of goods, as was ever done by neglect In the past. "The English market consumes In the neighborhood of 40,000 medium priced oars yearly, so the total number shipped from the United States makes a small percentage. Tho number of English men, who will buy an American car and be willing to have their friends know lr la arrowing constantly. As far as have been able to ascertain the number of Bhlpmenta now taking place ar not ordera but consignments, in soma in stances, dealers have small depoalts on a number of orders, but most of these cars are awaiting purchasers. 'Our business In England Is in a very healthy condition. W are eelling to our British coualna Just what they want They have their oirn Ideas regarding bodies end finish, and we are willing that they should buy those of . English desla-n for our chassis which they find. price considered, far superior to their own make. ' FALLACY OF BUYING SECOND HAND CA 'In purchasing an automobile for the first time, many people, with no ex perience in operating a car, are prpne to turn their attention to the second hand field,' says an expert. "This par ticularly applies to those who ar In the market for & medium priced car. Tb fallacy of this action Is aptly illustrated by the commonsenso logic of one of the northwest's prominent automobile dealers. "His main contention is that there are so many staunch and thoroughly re liable medium priced automobiles now on the market that the peraon who buys a cheap secondhand machine lfl losing money, in that he Is taking over a partially run down car at a price generally much higher than tt Is worth. "When buying a secondhand car, the purchaser Is taking over a machine that is being disposed of becaua it la not giving satisfactory service In the majority of caaea. "It is Ignorance that prompts a per son to buy a cheaj secondhand auto mobile. In doing so, he is taking the troublea of another man. He Is buy' Ing an inferior article at tip-top price There are countless sensible reasons why the new car should be bought In preference to the dilapidated auto. Bet ter material and superior construction are pronounced in late models. The pur chaser of a 1910 model motor car, ror Instance. Is not getting the advantages of the latest methods In building. "Furthermore and this, perhaps, is the most important consideration In automobile buying In buying a second hand machine, the purchaser forfeits ail claims to service that he would get by buying a new car. This service la im portant. It means that the mainte nance of an automobile Is materially reduced, when the proper service is given by the dealer. And all dealers who expect to establish a permanent business must and do extend this per sonal service." afternoon if yen will point your ear up Washington atreet to tb north end of Portland you will pass through one of lb prettleat residential sections of tb city, and will eon) Into vlw of to graat excavating work that la being done on King's Heights. Way beyond and In tha dim distance can be faintly seen th peaks of Mount Hood, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens,, rearing themselves In regal splendor. The roads all the way up the Qer mantown road are la perfect oonditlon, and there ahould b no reason why any car ahould not go up with perfect ease. Reaching the top, the tourist strikes th Pky Lin road, whloh proceeds along th top of the ridge, and here again one Is struck with th wonderful view, i Looking on the ether side and la the distance can be seen th beautiful Tual atin valley.
