Sales Are Reins Maue at a Decline of 't to 1 Cent a Pound With tho Receipts More Liberal; Mutton Market Is Strongest. Portland Wholesale Market. 4 Hggs weaker. . . Mohair season deferred. . - . - A Kigg marKet is winner wiu ,wwo again. Receipts for the day on Front street were about the heaviest of the season, and with an absence of outside demand stoelc was harder to move. Preparations are well under way for the storage season, but the price is still too high to admit of any business in that direction at present. California market is not -nearly so weak sine the storage of eggs began there, and for extra Zoa was being generally quoted at San Francisco to day. On Puget sound there Is no change in quotations, 24o a dozen being nomi nally in effect at Seattle, although It is slated that this price is shaded once in a while. . . The market here has mystified even the larger operators and some of them have paid about as much for supplies as they get from dealers. One large concern which was offering a fraction better than 20c a dozen t o, b. Port landv has suddenly change Its mino. and has sent out another card canceling the first price at once. The new price offered la equally mysterious, the print ed price being 20c, while 19o is written on the card in ink. Salos were made along the street at Soo to 21c this morning, the latter be ing for select candled atock. ., - WALNUT PRICES REDUCED . Price of walnuts has been reduced about a cent a pound by the California association. It has been found that the surplus waa unusually heavy and the lower figure Is named to induce buying. ASPARAGUS IP IN THE SOUTH 111 "her prices are again being named for asnaraeua in California on account of ihe colder weather and latest arriv als here cost more money.. There Is at ill considerable old stock available which Is selling at lower figures. UllTEIl M.utKbT la UUUD The dressed meat market Is weaker along the street today. The 'weakness is more apparent in dressed veal than in other lines; In fact, that Is the only branch of tho provision trade that shows any material easiness at this time. Sales of dressed veal were made In a limited way as Inch as 13 He a pound today, but some of the lending .handlers were not quoting above 12 foe a pound tor oest otrerinss. While the' hosr market Is not brisk along the street. It is not showing the strength so easily noticeable during the previous week. Sales as a rule are etui being maae at previous figures. The only real strong branch of the dressed meat trade today is the mut ton market. While offerings have been fairly liberal along the street recently, the trade hsa been good and sales of lambs are firm up to 10c. while pack era are getting 10V4o for this class of stuff. " A very rood movement of butter Is re. ported by all Jocal handlers. While prices are still being cut by some, most of the dealers are asking 84 to 3vq a pouna lor oest prints. Dealers are nominally quoting from 30 to 32c a pound Portland deliv ery for year-old hair. As an interesting development of the recent report that the big Kanford mills had paid 36c a pound in New Mexico for six months old hair, a special message from the mills In answer to an inquiry from Herman Metzger, their represent ative, says that the report Is without foundation, for not onlv did the" mill not pay 8 Jo a pound, hut Is not In the market at all for six months hair. Cattle prices are firm all over the country, Portland being a notable ex ception. The wants of the trade here are not heavy and therefore whenever a good run is presented it has a reac tionary effect Upon values. Without a place to take' care of the surplus , except at high priced - feeding grounds, the local trade is not in a po sition to successfully compete with mere fortunate centers In this respect. Only a few cattle came forward to North Portland today, but this did not move quickly.' . Competitive Karxets Good. Competitive markets are showing a real good tone for cattle. Advances are general everywhere and the re quirements of killers are not being taken care- of, All through the United States, and especially east of the Kock lea, the situation Is the best In years. Even though they have fairly good runs in the yards at Chicago, Kansas City and South Omaha, trade today Is far the best ever shown during the Lenten season. At Chicago they had a run of 13,000 cattle tor the day with the market show ing an advance of 10 to 16o over yes terday. ' .-'.--.-. '.:............- . Similar strength but to a greater degree was shown at Kansas City this morning. Cattle offerings for the day there were 6000 head. Prices closed 15 cents better than yesterday with firm trading right up to the end of the offerings. South Omaha cattle market was strong with an advance of 10 cents in the price. Top steers went at $8.00 this morning. ' Cattle shippers today: "W. W. Brown, Gateway, three cars; Charles Baldwin, Terrebonne, one load; Q. W. Portland today lost its reputation of being the highest priced swine market in tne country, v Chicago- overtopped North Portland by at least 15o during the day and the market was very firm. Locally the arrivals were quite fair during the day. -A total of 341 head arrived, compared with 180 head last Wednesday. Sales were made as high as $8.85 for tops but only one load brought this figure while another went at $ti.80 and still another at $6.76. The advance for the day was therefore 10c. Chicago showed its strongest tone for hogs today and the highest price of the season was in effect. One of the feat ures of special note in the swine trade everywhere was the fact that arrivals are smkller than a year ago. At Chi cago they were 31.000 for the day com pared with 36,000 a year ago. Tops sold there . at $7 this morning. This was for heavy packing stock while mixed loads went at $8.95. ' - . Kansas city nog market was extreme ly firm for the day. There waa' still another famine day In the mutton market at North Portland today, The only arrivals were-48 head and these were brought in by the reg ular buyer of, the Union Meat company for that concern. The situation in the - mutton . trade Is extremely good. Demand Is increasing while offerings for . this market are smaller. This is due entirely to the fact that better prices are available at other centers. Therefore the movement of sheep is away from here. At Chicago the situation in the mutton trade was so good that a further ad vance of 10c was forced In the price even though they had offerings of 20, 000 head this morning;,. All ' of the eastern markets seem to have fallen in with one another today, for at Kansas City the, sheep trade was advanced 10 to 15c for the day and the 13,000 head that came forward were quickly knapped up by waiting buyers. .'. .
