ArundeL lata rec tor of Trinity Episcopal church, Pitts burgh, but now an -avowed Christian Socialist, will not leave the Episcopal ministry, he says. His plans for the moment are to go south with his fam ily for rest until spring. He will then take up new work at some point not yet determined but where there la rea sonable prospect of success along his new line. "The freedom of the Episcopal church is unsurpassed among religious organi sations," he says, "and in Us very heart and genius Its ideal is the democracy of the Kingdom of God." Speaklnx of hia changed doctrinal belief, which he declares is not a great change and has been slowly making for years, he says: I regard the Idealism of the present- day enlightened socialism and tha gospel of the Kingdom of God on earth as one and the same thing." He states that published reports to the effect that New York or other laymen ara ready to sup port him and his new venture, what ever it may prove to be, are without foundation, lie' knows no such laymen. Trinity church, of which he has long been rector, occupies a unique position in the very heart of downtown Pitts burgh. With it .for companion la the First Presbyterian church. Together these famous places of religious wor ship and work ara institutions not of Pittsburgh alone, but of western Pennsylvania and of the country. Al though downtown, they have long held their constituencies and been. In point of Income and attendance, among -the great churches of the city. Topics: "Kindling Fire," "Absolute Surrender." M. C. A. A representative num ber of the members of tha committee were present, and plans were farther matured for tha gathering of a large amount Of data that la necessary in this large and Important undertaking. Tha basis of the study Is to ba the school district and there are soma 2300 districts in tha state. From each of these districts ara to ' bo gathered the statistics concerning religious condi tions within that particular district and then the whole satlstlcs ara to ba for mulated according to a consistent plan. As some of these school districts are In far away and sparsely settled portions of the state, much difficulty will be encountered In fully accomplishing this work. " At this meeting tha representatives of tha Christian churoh offered their resig nation from the committee and declined to have a part in this interesting de nominational study. Rescue Mission Work " Four thousand evangelists in America give all of their time to rescue mission work, and come into contact annually with not fewer than 300,000 men and women who reckon themselves, or are reckoned by others, to be down and outs. These evangelists, grouped In many rescue missions in every principal city, are formed Into a National Federation, with an execut've board. National con ferences are held, tha last one in Wash ington, when the members were received by President Taft It has lust been decided to hold the next conference in Boston in the spring of 1912. Rescue mission work had its start in the whole world in the Jerry McAuley mission, at 316 Water street, New York, in 1875. Since then missions hava been founded In England and France. In London there Is one mission called the "316 Water Street," after the location of the original American one. Meth ods of work among this submerged tenth hava vastly Improved within tha last decade, and today a very large percent age, compared with former years, of men and women attracted to the mis sions are helped and held. Every city in America has its prominent pastors, educators, or business men, who were rescued through the efofrts of these evangelists. At the present moment General Booth Is- negotiating for the transfer of all pauper English orphans to another land, where they can be adopted and looked after under the responsibility of the Salvation Army.
