THE OREGON . DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, THURSDAY . EVENING, DECEMBER 21, 1911. 1 19 1 f V OREGON US T ERN 1B1 VALE OH A BRANCH Trouble In Getting a Route From Vale Into Malheur Canyon Causes Survey to Begin Out of Parma. (Spceltl to The Journal.) Valfc Or., Dsc. 21. Vale Is taking on the real appearance of a railroad town this week, hundreds of railroad, laborer having arrived In town during the past few dya. Seventeen carloads of ma terial .for the Utah Construction com pany and the Wasatch Construction company arrived In the local yards Tuesday. In the' big- tralnload were several cars of hay, provisions, grading outfits and horses. Severe! more train loads will arrive during the. next few days. In spite of the rush now on In the 1 cal yards all the material Is being stored In the warehouse recently rented for that purpose as It Is understood that orders for real construction will not be given tor a week or two. The work during the winter months will be most ly tunnel and heavy rock work, but In the spring the contractors expect to have about 4000 men working along the Oregon Eastern through the Malheur canyon. Part of the outfit to -be used shortly Is now being gotten ready. As the general supply point for the big job of building ITS miles of the trana Oregon line. Vale presents the busiest scene of railroad activity in the north west at the present time. Right-of-way agents who have been In the field are finding it hard to se cure the needed strip of land from this city to the mouth of the Malheur can yon, 12 miles south, and yesterday a suN veying crew was placed in the field to run lines out of Parma, Idaho, straight west to the Malheur ttanyon. The pro posed line will be a cutoff of It miles over the Ontario-Vale line to the Mal heur valley, and the news caused some sensation in this city as the cutoff would leave Vale on a branch line. It is said that the present delay In the be ginning of actual construction work tn the canyon ha been caused by the-order of Construction Engineer O. 8. Os born to survey the cutoff through the bocalled South Vale oil fields. As the ll&rriman people have already surveyed the proposed cutoff twloe, the last time last spring, it Is likely a suit able pass can be found for the cutoff, at lean local railroad men say there is more than a bluff In the putting of a survey party in the field south of this city. After an autumn during which business has been quiet throughout all of eastern Oregon, the past two weeks have shown a wonderful increase, according to the wholesale and retail houses of this city. Traveling salesmen representing Baker houses in the eastern Oregon territory report a largely Increased business over the past few months, and In lines not particu larly affected by the approach of the holidays. General trading is on the In crease, they say, with the dealers In the smaller towns buying ahead more than since the summer' months. Since August they have confined their purchases to absolute ' necessities, and in contrast to the month of December, under ordinary conditions .with the approach of Invoice time, instead of falling off their orders are larger. Local bank clearings show an Increase, and the statements of Baker financial institutions for the past month. Indicate a healthy condition of business affairs in general. Ranchers are beginning to seallse on their crops, and more money is In circulation. Holiday business has been under nor mal In this city up to a week ago, but has been coming up with a rush the past few days, and retail merchants look for a total sales to exceed last year by a large figure. The Improved local train service on the O.-W. R. & N. Is thought to have been responsible for some part of the increase, as under present trans portation conditions people from nearby towns In each direction can reach thla city at convenient hours any time of day, while heretofore they were unable to do so.
