-1 ' THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND. FRIDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 1, 19U. 21 11 IBB ADHERED TO KING i Plan : of .. Historical Society Is Cause of Stir in Ranks of Organization Dedicated to Patriotic Purpose. , i Philadelphia, Dec. 1.- Up in Canada there Is an Episcopal minister who pos sesses the entire roster of Americans a who fought for, King- Geprge In;: the revolution. There. were more than: 20,- 000 of them and the, Pennsylvania His torlcal society. Is going to publish the If Librarian Jordan has his "way iT-b.oat it and -the. whole world will know Who's who. " There Is a hint that It will affect some membership In patriotic societies. -, - ' .. Officers of patriotic societies seen here say that if any got into their so- ," cleties who were not entiled to It, they ... deserved to be shown up, but doubted that there are any such, as each ap pllcant must furnish proof of his or her : revolutionary ancestry. Mrs, Frank Oetchell, regent of Phlla " delphla chapter of the Daughters of the -'American Revolution, said: ' . "At the beginning of the war many Aelleved that It , was right to be loyal lrto the king, "but changed their minds f it afterward. They became as good pa, trlots as any, and this is shown by the r number or desertions rrom trie regi , , ments recruited for England here." '' 1 There was something like 6J regi menta or commands which were re cruited for the Royalist party here, iv Boston and New York chipped in lib '' erally, as did New Jersey and South ' Carolina. But Philadelphia? wasn't far behind them. Although this was the . capital, and the cradle of liberty and ! things like that, the Tory sentiment was tremendous. In fact, when Benedict ; Arnold married Peggy Shippen and took , her to his mansion at Mount Pleasant (you can go there any day; it is the . Dairy, Fairmount Park), fear dad. Ed . ward Shippen, was very much opposed to it. because he did not like Ben. But - Peggy and Ben entertained right roy ally, and history tells Us that most of . their . guests were Tories, or persons loyal to King Qeorge. That was the : time that Ben was deep In it and was preparing to sell out, which he did later, loyalists Deserted in Numbers. . De Lancey raised a reglihent here for the king. They did not stick very well however, for out of 881 enlistments, 437 - deserted to help George Washington and his army. Of the record so far ob tained, it appears that' out of nine com- i mands recruited for King George, with a total enlistment of 8847, no fewer than 1636 skipped and afterward became patriots or non-combatants. ' Lieutenant Colonel William Allen, son of the chief Justice of Pennsylvania, " was another who stood pat on one king and got licked. He called his regiment the "Pennsylvania Royalists." Captain Richard Hovenden organised the Phila delphia. Light Dragoons, . and the roster thereof ,1s in the possession of the His torical society. Dr. Jflllua iFMSasbsa, librarian at the Masonic temple, is proudof the fact that the Masons of these days were patriots, and he has -facts to. prove it. In fact, he is now collecting the records, and preparing a complete history of free masonry of. the revolution. His records show that several lodges were organized In the American army. One of these was Lodge No. 18, which was recruited wholly in Knox's artillery, and another was known as "St. John's Regimental Lodge." His records of various lodges show that a Urge number of -members were "raised" with exceptional speed, that they might attend to their military Another Interesting . feature of Dr. . report the attendance of British of fl- delphla. at their meetings. But they left their swords, pistols and politics outside the lodge rooms. j American patriotic associations have r been rigid In their requirements for ,- membership, demanding proof of revo lutionary ancestry of the patriotic sort, and each society thinks its-, rolls are clear. If, however, any one has en tered surreptitiously the forthcoming list will tell it, and It is whispered that there la apprehension n some quarters. E DRUMMING AT HOT SPRINGS CHECKED (United Press Leased Wire.) Washington, Dec. 1. "World's pleas ure ground, and health sanatorium" Is a title that may well be bestowed upon Hot Springs, Ark., according to a re port just made by Harry H. Meyers, superintendent to the secretary of the Interior. "To Illustrate how widely these waters are known," he says, "a daily bath report, selected at random, shows patlonts here from seven foreign coun tries. The past year was the most pros perous evef known here. Every month of last year shows more visitors than' the corresponding month of 1910, the total number of visitors for the year being, approximately 180,000. The total receipts of the bathhouse In 1910 were $217,916, and in 1911 they amounted to TRAD ,A $253,814." . , ,. The numoer or. pains sum Dy zt Datn houses,; namea oy Meyers, was ys,i In the last year. The net profit was 1112,868.' ,- "What has been the worst detriment and curse to this resort for 40 years," ' says the report, "la what Is known as ! doctor and hotel drumming. Formerly 1t was not at all unusual for 20 or SO -hotel runners to meet the visitor at a Little Rock or Benton on every train, J,,, end fre.q unfitly some drummer went' as Hi far i aa Memphis and St. Louis. The f hotel drumming was but a mere subter ,'? fuge in most instances, the real object , ' being to place the visitor In the hands I of some physician who would give half I his fee to the drummer, I am happy to be able to report that since October 16, 5 ' 1909, when United , States inspectors I F were plaocd on all Incoming, trains to J notify the public what to avoid and f give full Information as to how to 'pro i ceed, the drurtiming on the ' trains has I entirely ceased, and the practice of the ",doctora dividing feea for drummed pa- . tlents has been reduced to the lowest a ebb ever known.". f: V' .
