Camp bell White, has issued a message to the churches of the United States and Can ada, calling attention to the. fact tliat the movement was B years ,fd on No vember IS last . ;v;, .'' ' . The movement has proved, thinks the secretary, r that Inlelll gent enthusiasm for foreign mission la not a hindrance but a help "to every other Christian ac tivity. . The ; spirit of Christian unity h'as . had a : phenomenal development Great communlona are now cooperating to a degree supposed to be Impossible five years ago, ' Churches of Canada have Increased from 1,492,S00 to $2,216,000 annually In their combined : home and , foreign gifts. Taking United States and Can ada together the increase of foreign mis sions' alone haa been from $8,980,000 to $18,350,000 annually, or a: gain of about 60 per cent . In addition to this increase to current gifts, more than $5, 000,000 have been raised during the past two years in. special equipment or endowment for foreign work. ; The aecretary says the movement ex pects to cooperate with the mlalonary agencies tf the- churches until the work of world evangelization Is actually ae compttBfied. At present there are 0 regular paid secretaries of the move ment . i ' t ; ,' ' May Have New Church 4 If the plans of the committee which la -composed of members of the Pied mont Preabyterian church, are carried out it is likely that the congregation will be housed in a new building be fore another year passes. The commit tee, which haa held several meetings, reports that so far they have met with much encouragement among the mem bers of the church. In the last two years the congrega tion of the Piedmont Preabyterian church has grown so large that a new chureh is a necessity. It is said that the new building, if built, will be of the latest construction and much larger than the preaent one. Bidding Prayers :j -a In several large churches in eastern cities, particularly Episcopal ones, al though not wholly limited to that com munion, the ' aeventeenth century plan of bidding prayers is being revived. These prayers are not put into prayer services on week night, but are em ployed oftenest on great occasions, and sometimes they are now forming part of regular Sunday morning worship. Bidding prayers had their origin at a period when .by no means all occupants of pews were able to read. . Bidding prayers are Intercessory, and often extremely personal and specific. In the manner now adopted the leader, bishop or paator, does the bidding from the pulpit The act seems to be pastoral and - hortatory xather. tha n. sacramen-i tarlan. The people stand, and . after each command to pray, silence follows during which it la expected that all prea ent offer mental petitions as bidden to do. " The command begins In each case with, "I bid you," etc., and then follows mention of cause to be prayed for. At tha celebration of' the one hun dredth anniversary of St George's church, New York, famous as the work of the Bev. Dr. Stephen H. Tyng and later of the Bev. Dr. W. 8. Bainaford, the vast congregation, including J. Pler pont Morgan, former Mayor Seth Low, and other distinguished people, all were bidden from th6 pulpit to, pray for the president of the United States, the may or of New York, the church throughout the world ana) similar definite persons and causes, and then there waa read a list of names of former New York min isters and laymen connected with St. George's, witjj the command to. give thanks for such lives and to pray for the continuance of work which they did in their time. mass, 8:30.
