K Reception to Pastor - - " Following the prayer meeting at the Grace Methodist church last Thursday night, a reception was given in honor of Rev. George Izer, of the Second Metho dist church in Philadelphia. Many friends of Dr. Izer, who have known him Since he first came to Portland In 1871 to take charge of Taylor Street church, which had Just been organized, and many of the original Grace church con gregation, which ho organized in 1884. . were present to welcome Dr. Izer. Dr. Izer conducted the prayer meet ing and at its close Dr. John H. Cud llpp. pastor of Grace church, Introduced Dr. Izer. Dr. Clarei.ee True Wilson also spoke and Dr. Izer told of early Meth odism in Portland. Dr. Izer came to Portland at the age of 21, Just out of college, and occupied the pastorate of Taylor Street church during the three years then allowed in one congregation. After three years In the east, he returned to Taylor Street ehurch and remained another three years. At the close of this pastorate he f organized Grace church, many of his former congregation going with him. Later he went to the Howard street church In San Francisco. When the Sampson Memorial church was built In that city, he took charge of It. At the close of his term in San Francisco he was called to take charge of Christ ohurch in Pittsburg. While In Pittsburg he assisted In building two churches costing over a million dollars. His next call was to Arch Street church in Philadelphia and from there he went to the Second Methodist church in the same city, where he Is at present. Dr. Irer will fill the pulpit at Taylor . Street church tomorrow morning and will leave Portland next .Wednesday for his eastern home. He has been a guest of Mrs. 8. V. Hill, of the Hill apart ments, 265 Fourteenth, during his visit In this city. Mrs. Hill was one of his first parishioners In the Taylor Street church In 1871. a a The women of the Highland Baptist church were Invited to go on a "cruise of the Island world" Wednesday for tho study of missions. The good ship "Im agination," with a full passenger list, set sail from the C. H. Cable dock, 1173 Rodney avenue, at 2:30 p. m. Landings were made at Hawaii, the Philippines and many other islands, where the par ty was personally conducted on tours, studying the stations at each. These parties were conducted by Mesdames C. H. Cable, W. E. Slater, W. P. King. F. B. Adklnson, D. Chambers, W. C. John ston, E. A. Matthews, Matilda Brown, T. J. Glover and Miss Mary Young. Music was furnished during the voy age by Mrs. Brown, and so realistic was e trip that one of the passengers be came seasick. The cruise was In charge of Captain C. H. Cable and Captain C. B. Elliott. Plana for the new church bouse of the First Presbyterian church. Thir teenth and Alder streets have been ac cepted and work will be commenced at once. The new house wll be used for Sunday school, social affairs and banquets. The building Is to be 60x100 and will cost In the neighborhood of $60,000. It Is located on the quarter block west of the present church. Work will be rushed and It Is hoped that It will be ready for occupancy within six months. It will be three stories high, with a basement. The old chapel will also be remodeled and made modern. A new lighting sys tem will be Installed In the church proper. Bible Study Courses -A Imagination Tour J New Church House i The adult Bible study courses, re , cently Instituted by, the Portland branch of the International Bible Students' as sociation, are meeting with general ap ' proval and encouragement . -This move- men, adopted here for the first time, Was launched In Brooklyn, the city of churches a year or two ago. The desire f ot the promoters, who constitute many or tne aavancea Bible student from all denominations, is to foster a spirit for doctrinal study among thoughtful Chris tian people. , t Many adult Christians have deplored the lack of facilities for Investigating those doctrinal points so vitally con nected with their denominational his tory. Every auxiliary of the home church Is engaged In arousing; and maintaining the Interest of the young or newly con verted. . Thus the average, advanced Christian finds himself In an anomalous) situation where he must submit to a spiritual famine In a land of plenty. "It U to supply this lack and to develop For Sunday Sermons and Record of Week's Church Events j - " ....... ' '," . " " - - '"-"-----ss--"","---w CAVE NEAR OCEAN SHRINE FOR WORSHIPERS It Is strangely odd to hear of a reli gious service being held In a cave In this day of great cathedrals and mag nificent church edifices In the cities, and. less pretentious houses of worship in almost every hamlet and country district. But no les.s a personage than Right Rev. Charles Scadding, bishop of Oregon of the Episcopal church, holds services in a primitive cave on the ocean, near Bandon, In Coos county, every summer. From 25 to 60 people attend the services, seating themselves on the sand. The cave Is In a huge rock within 300 yards of a cabin built by the bishop three years ago. The bjshop has erect ed a large cross on top of the rock and an altar and a cross have been erected Inside the cave, so the rock has) th appearance of one of nature's own ca thedrals. Cathedral Rock Is but one of several that lend lmpresslveness to the view one may have from "Bishop shack," which is the name Bishop Scadding has given his cabin. The cave cathedral has been named by Bishop Scadding, "St. Peters-ln-the-Rock." Not far from it Is another rock called Sphinx Rock. The outlines of a mammoth face, re sembling the sphinx of ancient days, are plainly to be seen. UnlQne Shrine. Bishop Scadding makes his cabin near Bandon his headquarters for his summer missionary work. It m the most central point from which to reach the 12 missions the Episcopal church has on the Oregon coast, which extend from Gold Beach on the south to Gardi ner on the north. "Some may think our stay at Bishop shaek Is a pleasure outing," said Bishop Scadding. "It is far from that. It Is the scene of a strenuous summer's campaign among our missions. I preach two and three times every Sunday and travel many miles between missions." Bishop Scadding recently published an account of his work along the coast In a more general Interest In critical Bible study that the L B. 8. A. undertakes this work. The study courses . are ar ranged with special care to meet the needs 6f the lay mind. The Sunday evening class In Blckners hall, St. Johns, Is growing In Interest and attendance. Wall's hall at 8 ell wood has been secured by the society and a special lecture course will begin there this coming Monday night. A unique feature is the fact that no charges are made nor collections lifted. After nearly nine years of service at the Spokane Avenue Presbyterian church, David A. Thompson baa ac cepted a call to the First Presbyterian church Of Olympla, Waah. A meeting of the congregation of the local church has been called for next Tuesday night, at which the resignation wfll be con sidered and in all probability accepted. A committee will also be appointed to arrange fpr the transfer of Mr. Thomp son to the Olympla presbytery. No definite action will be taken by the Portland presbytery In regard to the transfer or to the selection of a successor Until Mr. Thompson returns from his vacation at Ocean Park In Sep tember. Mr. Thompson has made a splondld record during his pastorate and the church has made many im provements. Only the fact that he will have a broader field In. which to labor determined Mr. 'Thompson to make the change. . Farewell to Popular Tenor. An Informal musloal evening waa held at the home of Rev. and Mrs. James D. Corby, on BTbadway, Wednesday evening, as a farewell to H. I. Bowles, the popular tenor who has been sing ing In the choir of the Universallst church and who is soon to leaver the city to take up newspaper work. Miss Eda Trotter, the musical director, had a goodly representation of the. choir present and during the evening Miss C. Banfleld, Miss A. Tereck and Miss Elsa De Hass were heard In charming selections. The church Is steadily be coming a musical center.:- Several fine recitals have recently been held there, and others are being arranged. -. .. - a :y.,-- Open Air Meetings. . ; l y ' The young people of the East Bide Baptist church will , continue to hold their Sunday evening meetings out of doors as long as the weather remains pleasant, as they have found the . open air meetings much more pleasant. The meetings are held oi a lawn at East Eighteenth and Couch. i . . j 4 , ' - J- ' s" ' ' f - ' tt - ?y i t f " r s - o u - xs t - ' J!- Z - - jr"-. . - s - - " - f w , J III Z 111 ' f fy m "i V1 . "There Is much of a holiday character about our summer missionary work," he said. "In the first place, it is a change of scene and work for those of us asso ciated for the purpose of carrying It on. The long drives and walks through the wonderful fir, cedar and redwood for ests; the views of the ocean, the deep winding rivers where salmon leap, the smaller streams where the rainbow trout rise ravenous for the sueculent. appearing fly; the simple camp life at 'Bishop shack,' where the bishop's wife Is the excellent cook, and where all the staff haul wood and water; the mar velous and fantastic rocks, the calm yet restless sea; the variety of fish food and the simple life lived close to na ture all add a charm and Inspiration to onr work which make us very great ful that we have been called to labor in that part of the Lord's vlneyaai which, reaching out Into the farthest west, feels Its responsibility for the farthest east.
