Bryce of 1661 McKenna avenue for the rental of a house and gave him a check for $16 from which he received $6 change. Later, it was found that the checks were worthless and the police have been naked to look for the man. The man Is about 45 years of age, six feet tall and Weighs about 14S pounds. A communlca' tlon from the Oregon Poultry and Pet Stock association, protesting against the proposed-ordinance prohibiting the keeping of fowls In certain residence districts ef the. city, was filed with the health and police committee of the city council today..' Wood, industrial commissioner -of the United States to Japan, writes from Yokohama to the Portland Commercial olub, that he is helping many Portland and other Pacific coast exporters along over in Japan In connection with his other work. He sends a card showing that Japan has a number of very fine bridges spanning river, bridges that put some of the larger steel structures in the United States far In the shade. To Explode Mine, A unique feature is promised for th Astoria Centennial celebration in a letter to the Portland Commercial club from Secretary Craw- ahaw of the Astoria Chamber of Com merce. This la the explosion of a sub marine mine at the river's mouth, off Fort Stevens, on August It, the opening day of the Oregon Development league convention at Astoria. This is a very rare attraction, and will be of Interest to all who are in Astoria at that time. He oVns property on the street and alleges the assessment for the expense of widening Is excessive. A temporary restraining order has been Issued holding up the proceedings.
