The poorer allowing Is made In the face of a lower river, when 'a better catch Is generally expected Reports from Astoria re unusually conflicting. One authority there states the catch to date to be one ot-the poor est in years while another believes that the fact that the Centennial celebration is being held In that city, is rewponslble for the unusually good showing. Private advices received by The Jour nal would Indicate that the catch to- date has been almost the same as a a year ago. While up to a short lime I ,. V. L .- .. 1 I - . . Confirmation has now been given the exclusive announcement made In The , Journal several days ago that the local ' egg market is being manipulated by In terests that handle only eastern sup-; piles. At that unve u was stated that ' on Thursday the manipulators would be riving1 out 27c rb the quotation on fresh Oregon, although they were only hand ling the eastern product This morning a newspaper that has persistently fa vored the manipulators quoted eggs for - yesterday's trading at the exact price forecast in these reports nearly a week ago. . ' 1 With receipts of local eggs rather plentiful and with demand only fair, the bulk of the arrivals of the home product are being freely offered by commission handlers at 2426c a dosen. the latter being extreme top for candled . goods except when the wholesaler re- .: tails a few dozen to a restaurant. One large lot was purchased by a First street creamery at 24c a dosen, while several Front street dealers were quite willing to sell at a similar figure. William Hennlngsen, connected with the eastern egg house of the Hennlngsen company, continues to tell local people what they shall sell Oregon s , at, . notwithstanding the fact that he is an ; exclusive handler of the eastern product. By placing a very high quotation on the Oregon product, the manipulators - expect to sell their, cold storage eastern product- at high prices while the trade passes over the Oregon product because of the extreme value. Even at several cents advance over the eastern product , the local goods are much the best m BERRY MARKET HIGHER Higher prices are being named in the berry market today as the result of the heavier idemand. Offerings are practi cally unchanged. Loganberries have been advanced to $1.858.00. blackber ries 11.75 2.00, black caps $2.25 2.60, and raspberries $2.00 per crate. These go to the cold-storage plants on account of the extra premium paid for fish larg er than 26 pounds. The decreased .catch within the past 24 hours on the lower river is said to be due to the fact that the fifth are starting upstream. This therefore Is expected to result in a greater pack by the upper river plants. The market for the canned fish con tinues firm everywhere. WHEAT HAS A REACTION Chicago, July 21. Wheat market prices showed a reaction today. There was an opening loss of Uc In the three options, and a closing o to He under yesterday. There was a forced decline of fully 26c In the cattle trade owing to the filled up condition of the trade and the continuance of heavy shipments. Most or tne sturs coming rorward to the North Portland cattle pens are of poor ouallty and this is having a serious ef- reci upon prices. The trade Is In such a position that there Is scarcely any call at all for bulls and sales In this line are made lower than In other stock. Top for steers now stands at $6 and t would take exceptional quality to bring this figure Just now In the local yards. Recent marketing of cattle has been very liberal. The arrivals were forced on account of the depleted range. The lack of grass has caused many to try and unload the bulk of their hold ings now Instead of holding them for awhile when there Is every indication of a sharp advance In prices. Top steers went at $6.65. Sheep Market Quarter Off. Forecast made by this paper yester day of a loss to result in the sheep and lamb trade has materialized In full. The entire ehesp trade is lower st North Portland and even at the decline the movement is seriously restricted. As with cattle, holders are making every effort to market their sheep early on account of the lack of suitable range. Top lambs are down to $5.260 6.35 u day and the best offerings from the Willamette valley will not likely bring more than $5 on the basils of today's demand and supply. With feed lots overfull and with supplies showing a greater volume, buy ers and sellers are apart in their views, Killers are not disposed to buy at all. Some of them are willing to take nn a few loads providing the price is right. Owing to the fact that their fed lots are filled with cattle and sheep, they must of necessity secure additional quarters at heavy expense. For that reason they demand a conceslon in price before tak ing hold. At South Omaha today there was a weak tone generally In the sheep and lamb trade, prices being mostly 10c lower. Sheep 'and lamb values Select lambs Ordinary lambs Best wethers Common lambs Ordinary wethers Best ewes Ordinaiw ewes of Marktt Is XTominsX While a vary small bunch of hogs were offering In the swine trade at North Portland today, not enough stuff came forward to fully test quotation. The principal shipment was five loads of Nebraska stock that came direct to packers. The absence of local offerings of hogs is stimulating the demand and first class stuff would readily 'top the market While there was a loss of 5c in the South Omaha price today, this would not seriously affect conditions here because of the almost general ab sence of supplies.
