THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SATURDAY 1 EVENING, JANUARY 21, . 1911. GH1U FORM RESCUE BAD BOYS Fifty Members of Congrega .: tional -Body -Pledge Selves to Become "Big Brothers" to Juvenile Court Wards. The Con jregatlonallsts of ' Portland have Joined the Big Brother movement Fifty men of the First Congregational church met yesterday and pledged them selves to became "Big Brothers" . to wards ot the Juvenile court, the purpose. as explained by Judge Gat ens In an adarets last Sunday night, being to put bud boys under good influences and make cltliens Instead of criminals out of them.' It has been the experience of the officers of the Juvenile court .that the "Big Brother? organization, has actually decreased the number of youth' ful offenders, because of : the number -who have been. given something Interest lng to do, when otherwise they would have been In mischief or petty crime. ' Xew Church Planned. , Members of the recently organised Waverly Congregational church are ne gotiating for the purchase of lots suit able for the construction of the church building for which they have been plan ning. The pastor of the Waverly -.JlhlirAh. Ytav. Mr WlnAV hAl1una that ' it will be possible to begin the con struction of an attractive building be fore the beginning of the spring season. Dr. EL I House, pastor of a 8pokane Congregational ohurch, has declined to become pastor of the Hassalo Congre gational church in Portland. Dr. House was the unaminous choice of the Has salo congregation and it was under stood for some time that he would ac cept, because of other Interests which made a residence in Portland fully as useful and probably more, desirable. It seems, however, that the Spokane con gregationallsta were adverse to losing their pastor and he yielded to their re Quests that he1 stay. Dr. Walter Benson Hlnson, pastor at the White Temple, has been making an evangelizing tour of a number of Oregon cities during the past two weeks. He Iihs spoken to-large audiences In Salem, Eugene and the towns of Southern Ore gon. Last Monday night the , Baptist men of ' Portland who have Joined the Laymen's Missionary movement met in the White Temple and perfected their organisation. Yloe tn Portland. '7s Portland as good morally as the police say it Is 7" Rov. Albert Ehrgott, pastor of the East Side Baptist church proposes to answer the question in his sermon tomorrow evening. Rev. Ehrgott says he has personal knowledge that certain forms of vice in Portland are flourishing under cover if not under protection, and he proposes to expose conditions of which he has learned. A committee having in 'charge pre parations for the Paciflo Coast Congress of Congregational churches will meet next Monday at 2 p. m. and complete plans for the holding of the congress in Portland next eummer. A commission of the Congregational ministers of Portland met yesterday In I'ilgrim Congregational church and there formally Ji.ssolved the pastoral relation of Rev. Guy I Dick to the church. Rev. Mr. Dick has been suffering from poor health and will probably retire l'rom active service for a year. Will Exchange Fulplts. Some time during February or March, Dr. Luthor R. Dyott, pastor of the First Congregational church, and Rev. F. J. Vanllorn, pastor of the Plymouth Con gregational church In Seattle, will ex change pulpits, and each will hold a series of special services in the churoh of the other. Dr. Vanllorn- is pastor of Seattle's leading Congregational church, while Dr. Dyott's place as one of the leaders among the ministers of Portland is well known. Special singers will assist In making both the Seattle and Portland series of special meetings more attractive. As the meetings in the Plymouth church in Seattle will be ttfe last held before the congregation moves into its new building further down town special interest attaches to the srles. Portland Presbyterians are making elaborate preparations for the series of evangellstlo services which are to com mence under the leadership of Dr. John Balcomb Shaw of Chicago during the early part of February. Dr. William Hiram Foulkes, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, says that these meetipgs are not to be considered as exclusively for Presbyterians but for all the people of Portland. Noon meet ings are to be held down town and spe cial muslo has been arranged for. Dr. Shaw is known as one of the ' great Presbyterian preachers of the nation. raster Entertains. The Trl-County Push club of which Will E. Piirdy Is president, is leading a campaign for the construction of ,a bridge across the Willamette river at Buttevllle on the road to Salem. Cltl sens of Newberg are also making a fight for the building of the bridge near their town. The push club draws its mem bershln from Clackamas, Yamhill and Marlon counties. Mr. Purdy. the pres ldent, has Issued a statement on behalf of the club, saying in part: The bridge at Buttevllle will be on the direct line betwpen Salem and Port land and will make the trip much shorter. Newberg Is a mile and half away from the river. The location of the bridge near Newberg would of course benefit that- town, but It would be an Inconvenience for the general traveling public because of the round about way ond added distance. "More farmers would use the bridge If It were built at Butlovillo. A bill will be Introduced before the legislature authorizing the construction of the bridge at Buttevllle probably next Mon day. We believe that our plans deserve the support not only of the public we are trying to' convenience but of the legislature."
