Charging that Stoddard WestfftU, a.
prlvato detective, had harassed hsr and

nervous' prostration, Mrs. 'Althea Wal
ker, beneficiary of an estate of more
than $1,000,000, was on the stand "in the
municipal court this morning to testify
ftgalnst Westfall," who svas arrested
yesterday tr "shadowing" them. After
she and her- son had give their testi

morrow, when Westfall expects to have
witnesses here from Seattle. A
Mrs. Walker and the son left for Salt
Lake City to answer a, citation to ap
pear before the federal Court , there in
a legal battle ovef the estate. West
fall made a great effort to hold them
in the city until the case was settled,
charging that his arrest was merely a,
ruse to keep him off their trail, so they
could have. secret bonds worth nearly

refused this and started a fight to get
possession of the estate, i "" . . ,
Tfn days ago Mr. Walker and Clar.
ence Walker left Salt Lake City for
Seattle tn an automobile. They, went
la the machine as far as North Yaki

to Seattle. The other claimants to the
estate ehai-ged that they were trying
to escspe from the Jurisdiction Of the
court and also that they had taken
with them securities of the value of
tM.000, defying the order of the court
to leave the estate Intact. ' , "'
In addition to placing employ;' Of

"Accompanied -yr aa attorney.' Mrs.
Walker and th son reached Portland
yesterday morning on their, way back
to gait Lake City. The lawyer found
Deputy ' District Attorney' Collier' "and
swore out a warrant, for th arrest of
Westfall, who cam onthe same train,
charging him - with "grossly Injuring
her and her property, and defying pub
lio morals and decency." Westfall was
arrested at the union depot, but, later
released on ball of $500 furnished by
D. I. Clause of th Thiel agency." ').
"This man followed me everywhere I
went In. Seattle," said Mrs. Walter In
testifying. "The first - time I noticed
him he; was i m an automobile behind
my machine and kept within a few feet
of us.. I ordered the chauffeur to
stop at a store, and he also stopped. It
was the same everywhere I went He
was always- behind us,

"In addition he secured quarters at
a boarding house whet my Son fend the
chauffeur were staying, and spied upon
them. I am not in good health and I
was neatly prostrated. f .. .v. ',
Westfall, who la an attorney, drew
from Mrs. Walker the admission that
he had never spoken to nor until today
and had never approached her, He ad
mitted that he had followed the party
and also declared he knew they bad
purchased . tickets for .both pocatello,
Idaho, and Salt Lake City and named
the compartments which they had re
served. $ He contended, however, that
he had not committed any crime in
"shadowing" them and declared that
vi Inn Ms witnesses arrive! from Te
at tie ha would show thit he was the
ahufifi'1 person. - . .
Clarence Walker also took the stand
find told of feeing Westfall at various
places, including the hoarding house in
Seattle.' where he " stayed. He nld
Westfall was introduced to him there
as "Mr. Stoddard." The detective re
plied that his first name was Stoddard
and that he used it for business pur
poses. . i
Court Sebukes Sleuth.
'I will say right now, that your
conduct does not appeal to m at all,"
Judge Tazwell told him. "You have
the privilege, however, of bringing In
your witnesses and the-case will' not
be decided until then." 't . .
The court refused to grant Westfall's
request that Mrs. Walker and Clarence
Walker. be placed under 'bonds to ap
pear here at a later- date for the hear
ing and they 'were permitted to continue
their trip after they had testified.
"Westfall will contend In 'defense 'that
his agency Is ' licensed to do business
In both Oregon and Washington and
that he was n6J; exceeding the privileges
conferred upon him as an employe when
he ''shadowed" the Walkers, He Inti
mated that j other- detectives "would be
on the same train which took the Wal
krs out of the Hty and that thejr would
not ' escape espionage. e He . also ; de
clared that they - had bought a -ticket
for Pocatello. Idaho, with the probable
purpose of taking an automobile from
there so they might enter into Salt
Lake City secretly.
