The bids will be invited in two parts,
as the board wants, to reserve the rlgbt
to eliminate the auditorium and a few
other features from . the main struc
ture,' should It be desired ,to do ao, in
letting the contract. It was -explained
that the finishing of the auditorium,
for Ins lance,, could be , done at a later
clay In caso the cost of the structure
should run up so high that it would
not be deemed advisable to complete
. the auditorium at this time.
The board also took 'up the matter
of conducting night v schools ; or the
winter term, -The schools will be open
three nights a week, Mondays, "Wednes
days and Fridays, Instead of five nights,

The franchise asked by the Oregon
Electric company over Salmon and Tenth
streets to connect Its tracks with those
of the United Hallways met the ap
proval yesterday of the city council, and
the measure was referred to the execu?

committee tecently approved this routs,
despite the protest 'f ' a . number of
property owners on Salmon' street, who
objected to the track being placed on
that street. , Efforts are now being
made to block the 'Salmon-Tenth street

The county grand Jury yesterday af

court on a charge of having stolen a
roll of copper wire from the Portland

E. McDonald and C Peterson are held
on a larceny charge. Jesse Barnett was
acquitted of having mads ah assault
with a deadly weapon. 60 were Joe
Eat a via, Joe Llteman and J. D. Krutch,
all three having been indicted for an
alleged larceny.
BIBLE CLASSES HAVE
SEVEN HUNDRED MEMBERS
Seven hundred men and boys are now
teglstered In the Bible classes of the
Portland Young Men's Christian Asso
ciation, although the season for these
classes opened only a few weeks ago.
Last year the feelstratlnn in rima
study was 100 i, the largest number of
any cuy west or uurra 10. This year
