Wisconsin Senator Says He Is
, Real Progressive; Should
Be Sent to Congress..
Judftnj from letter Vecelved at the
Tieadnuatrers of C J. Reed, insurgent
Republican candidate for congress for
- the second congressional district. Indi
cation are that the Insurgent move
ment win sweep Oregon. Mr. Reed,
tv-Mie he has not made a speaking cam
paign, haa not , been idle. In spite of
the claims of the candidate who claims
very county in the district, he I" not
alarmed over the outcome next Satur-
day. :,; ' ' r '
. One of the Important factors la the
Reed campaign has been the aid given
lv Senator; La Follette. Senator La
' Follette has indorsed the candidacy of
Mr. Reed both in a personal, telegram
and ln-rn editorial which appeared In
La FoUette's Weekly Magaasine of Sep
tember It. Francl J. 4 Heney, with
whom Mr. Reed senred as United States
marshal has also ' urged his many
friends In Oregon to assist In the leo
lion of Mr., Reed. - . , 4,
, In his editorial, Senator La Follette
urges the voters In the second district
to send Mr. . Reed to congress, saying
they need men who will truly repre
sent their fellow cltiaen In congress,
more than ever. The editorial follows:
"On September 24 th people of the
Second district of Oregon will nominate
a Republican candidate for congress.
Thla district Is' now misrepresented by
Congressman Ellis. In spite of his con-
' slstent record of 'system service,' Ellis
Is seeking renomlnatlon. Opposing him
in Charles J. Reed of Portland. Mr.
Reed is a genuine progressive. His
honesty and his faithfulness . to public
Interest have been tested. He was
Francis J. Heney's chief assistant In
prosecuting land frauds in Oregon. He
was appointed to this position by Presi
dent Roosevelt over the bitter objection
of Senator Fulton and Oregon's congressmen.-
He made good. If the voters
of the Second . congressional district
want to give themselves true and able
representation in congress, they will
nominate Reed.' He will make good In
the same way at Washington. And the
rest of the country, as well as Oregon,
need men In congress, now mora than
ever before, who will truly represent
their fellow citizens. Give us Reed."
WASHINGTON COUNTY IS
. STRONG ANTI-ASSEMBLY
"Laurel, In Washington county, and
tfc country surrounding It, I , over
wliBrniflgly anti-assembly and in favor
of Statement No. 1," said E. Wenn
strom, a farmer fftid sawmill man who
has lived in the Cbehalem mountain
; district for many years, and owns one
of the large farms there.
Mr. Wennstrom was In Portland yes
terday on business and incidentally took
a peep into the political situation. "We
may be farmers," he continued in a vein
of sarcasm, 'but we are firmly opposed
to the assembly idea, and stand unani
mously for Statement No. 1. And we
hava our reasons, and would be able to
give them, should anyone care to know.
"We have a pretty fair knowledge of
Washington "county's political' history,
and the methods pf the old assembly
regime, and we are not going to return
to the deplorable system If we can help

WOMAN PEEKS THROUGH
HOLE AND GETS EVIDENCE
"That man looked as though he lived
on rata, and mighty poor ones at that
I've always heard, that some Chinamen
eat rats. Many of them look skinny
and starved." This was the way May
Spencer, a private detective, described
the appearance of C. J. Hoolbrook yes
terday, in testifying In the divorce suit
of William 3. Huston in the circuit
court.
. Hoolbrook Is mixed up in the marital
troubles of the Huston family, being
the star boarder. In the home before it
was broken up last May. The private
detective said she boarded at the Huston
home , one week to get evidence. She
added that she accomplished her pur
pose by peeping through an opening in
the floor of her room.
The detective said she saw Mrs. Hus
ton give one of. the children a bath in
front of Hoolbrook, and that Hoolbrook
later took a bath In Mrs. Huston's
presence. She also said Mrs. Huston
went into Hoolbrook'a room. When the
detective gave the signal the officers
broke into" the room. Mrs. Huston fled
from the room, leaving her slippers,
and declaring her dream had come true.
This dream, testified the witness, was
that Mrs. Huston had dreamed that
something awful would happen. The
aeteeuve rurtner testified that Mrs.
Huston had told her a fortune teller
had related that some day she would
marry another man and they would
travel in Europe.
Huston la 47 years old and is a brides
builder. His wife is it years old, and
Hoolbrook Is 26 years old. Huston haa
charged his wife with statutory oft
renses covering the past four years.
She replies to his charge by saying
he has been extremely cruel.
