report of the county school superintend
ent of Clatsop county the enumeration
of the Children of school age in that
County shows an increase of 835. the
total being Hit. The enrollment shows
25 decrease, however, from 2523 in 1909,
to 2509 In 1910. The number of teach
ers employed last year was 98 , as
against 1 for' the previous year. , The
average monthly salatry of mals teach
ers remains at $S0 and that ot female
teachers at $53, there being no change
In either instance, i There was expended
for school purposes last year 187,897.72
as against $75,130.74 for the previous

Increased 163 and .now totals 4850, while
the census shows an Increase of chil
dren of school age of 129, the total be
ing, 8499. The number of teachers em
ployed last year was 182 as against 177
school houses built list year and nine

$70 to $78 and the average salary of fe
male teachers was $54 last year as
against $50 the year previous. The total
expenditures for school purposes In

'Continent At Montreal

Montreal, July 3L There are only a
few weeks to the opening of tha twenty
first Eucnarlstlo congress and. in view
of th grat importance of the Coming
event not only to the city of Montreal
but to the entire Roman Cathollo' world
of America, preparations are mads upon
scale befitting this great gathering
which is destined to. mark an epoch In
the history of the church In America. '
BUice the first congress of this kind
was held tn Lille, France, In June, 1218,
in answer to a' call Issued by Bishop
Gaston do Segur, many Eucharfstio con
gresses have been held, always in cit
ies Intimately connected with some of
the most Important phases and epochs
in the history of the Roman Catholic
church. In consecutive Order Lille,
Avigdon, . Liege, Freyburg, , Toulouse,
Paris, Antwerp, Jerusalem, , Ithelma,
Pary-le-Monlal, Brussels, Lourdes, An
gers, Namours, Angouleme, Rome, Tour-
nal, Mets, London and Cologne were the
meeting places Of th past Euoharistto
congresses. It will be seen from that
list that heretofore but one of the 20
"congresses was held outside of Europe,
the one which met at Jerusalem, . The
coming congress, which will Open 'In
Montreal on September 6 and will con
tinue till September 11, will have the
distinction ' of . bein c the second " outside
of Europe and the first en the Amer
ican continent -
Montreal had a- strong claim for the
honor of being selected as the meeting
place' for the first Eucharistio congress
i in America. It is not only an Important

growth Of the, Roman Catholia church
In America. It is bno of the largest
and most: Important centers of the
church on the continent and abounds in
historical memories from the time when
Cathollo missionaries first carried tha
blessings of religion to the red men of
the Canadian forests. v

over the- probable reason for the visit
or John D. Isaacs of Chicago, 111., con
suiting engineer of the' Harriman lines,
to Portland. Mr. Isaacs arrived -in
Portland yesterday and left this morn
ing. He held a long conference witfl J.
P. O'Brien, vice president and general
manager of the Harriman lines in ore
gon, yesterday but no Information as to
its real Import could be obtained.
Railroad . men generally believe Mr.
Isaacs, wlille on a tour of Inspection
of the Harriman lines, got off In Port
land to discuss with Mr. O Bnen the
proposed electrification of the Fourth
street Hue, and engineering questions
arising In the building of the Deschu
tes and ''-Tillamook-, lines. -
Mr. Isaacs Is one of the best known
engineering experts in the world..
