I CP. IT, ON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, THURSDAY EVENING, JiiY 21, 1!)10. r f-vi ItilDT IN TANGLE II1L1G ESTATE Son of Dead Woman, Who Left Much Valuable Proper? 'ty, Wants Present Adminis : trator Ousted. j Seeking to revoke letters on the es - tate of hisj mother. Mrs. Frances Rich ardson, Issued last month to Arnold 8. Graham, William If. Woodward has filed petition In the county court asking that he be named as administrator. -This gives. another turn to a much mixed estate, one . phase of ' which Is a .suit by tClarenca- Price,- a mulatto; for $1242 I alleged to have been loaned to her v shortly before her death, as a result of i which $2500 worth of Jewelry Is, under attachment ... if. B. Nicholas, attorney for Graham, ; the administrator, la fighting the appll ',. cation , of Woodward on two grounds. . He asserts the eon was too. late in mak Ing application, as- the statute requires j application within 30 days from the date of death, and he further objects that J; Woodward is not a fit person to take charge of the estate. Wealthiest Colored Woman, f ' In support of this latter assertion he declares Woodward has been hobnobbing " with Price and urging: the allowance of price's claim against the estate of his mother. , Nicholas argues ft would be , disastrous to the Interests of tlie- estate to appoint Woodward as administrator , and would jeopardize the rights of an--. other son of the deceased, James Smith, ' an 11-year-old boy, who lives In Boise, . Idaho. Mrs. Richardson, a mulatto, resided In Boise until May 16, when she came to ; Portland in company with Price,, under whose influence she la alleged to have been because of her failing mind. She ' Is reputed to have been at one time the 'wealthiest colored woman In the northwest,' paying $35,000 In cash for a t home In Boise and $6000 more to fur- ' rush it, She was best known in Boise K:- ma Agnes Bush, and papers : in f pos- - session of the administrator Indicate she . ... was married six' times to husbands named Williams, ' Tlchnor, Woodward, Smith, Duslyand Richardson. From the loM husband, Richard son, she was dl-rcd":''p"-"',' - Property Worth $18,000. - Property in Boise . belonging to the -estate Is said to be worth at least $12, . 000. The Idaho estate is being admin- ' lsterad there, and all the Multnomah ; county court has to deal with Is the Jewelry she brought with her." This is fciild to be worth $2500 and is In charge t of the manager of . the Crystal; Springs sanitarium, where she died. It Is held mbject to order of the court because of Clarence .Prices suit for money which -he alleges he loaned to her since last November. Price brought his suit against her on Jv.he2, and the papers were served. at . the deathbed.' She passed away on June . 4. Later it developed that Frank Welse b,h;oiu had been appointed her guardian in the Idaho courts on May 27, ojv the ground ' she was incompetent to mariage "her own . affairs. ' ' -. v,- ' Woodward in his petition says he was " out of Portland when his mother died . or he would have asserted bis rights before. That he was a son was not ':' known , to Nicholas at the time Graham was appointed. It being then supposed . the 11-year-old boy In Boise was the only heir. Judge Cleeton will have to ' decide whether Graham should be ousted In. favor of' Woodward and the circuit court later will determine whether Price - has a legal claim .on the diamonds. An additional argument to be used against the advisability of appointing Woodward la that in employing an at- '. torney he selected John Manning, ' who Is-also attorney for Price In the . suit against the administrator. rThls is al- , leged to indicate too great a friendship ' , for Price, whose claim the son is said ; to favor, ' - - EARNHARTS ARE . - ORDERED OFF ISLAND (Spaetal DttttA to The Joarnatl -Pendleton, . Salem, Or.. July 21. -That the, fruit Industry In Oregon has reached such a point that "the grower no longer has the time or ability to market his output and that a separate agency, apart from the producer, with a specialized business ca pacity must attend alone to the selling and distribution, Is the opinion of Coun ty ' Erult . Inspector Armstrong! "AW of the growers, endeavors must be concentrated along lines that will tend to elevate the quality-of his. fruit. He must keep himself up in the study of horticulture and- anply every moment With the one object in view, better. frUtt. He cannot do. these things,' feays Mr. Armatrong, ''and also be successful In marketlhg his fruit, selling; and distrib uting, for that Is another branch of the fruit Industry that requires special knowledge "the same-as the growing of the fruit. It is merely the same story of higher specialization and cooperation, that has already been applied by , big business for the past few decades." " Mr. Armstrong believes that the fruit men should engage 6ompetent business management to attend to their market' lng alone. ..The fruit union is a. Btep in the direction pointed out by Marlon county's fruit inspector but it -does not go far enough in his opinion, The-busl ness manager-ehould have "full control, the growers t6 have nothing to do with his division of the labor. '(That the dairymen will also eventual ly have to, organize unions for selling and distributing their produce Is also the opinion of Mr.' Armstrong and he says that it will not be long before tlio people through their government will demand that all milk be certified by eome organization through "which it must pass before reaching the consumer. He sees no reason that the same meth ods recommended for. marketing fruit cannot be used to advantage in market ing milk. The methods that have made Hood River famous for Its apples and Wenatchee famous for its fruit could be used to make dairying districts of the state famous for their milk. .
