In some Instances the rates will be raised 75 cents per month . higher ' than at present. Over 1200' phones are now in use by the Home company and tliv company figures that If they lose 100 phones as the result of theraise they will still have all the business that the plant can. care for. ; , The plans . was originally constructed to care for. about 600 phones and the rates were made with this as a basis. UNION VOTES FOR -; . ; NEW HIGH SCHOOL v Union, " Or.. June S. At the election here yesterday the city voted bonds to the amount of $50,000 for the construc tion of a new high sohool building. The proposition -carried by a large majority. This is the second election held Jor the purpose of voting on the proposition. In the first election, which alBo carried Byj large, majority, the direotors er roneously gave only 19 day notice, In stead of 20, aa specified by.law, and as a result the second election was neces . eary. Architect and contractors are al-- ready In th field for the purpose of making bids on. the building, and It is expected work will commence soon. RAILROAD COMMISSION INVESTIGATES RATES & ' Hearings' are being held from time to time by the state railroad commission to ascertain the reasonableness of class rates on the Sputhern Pacific south from Portland. Jtesldents of Medford, represented by H. C. Garnett, member of the t Medford Commercial club, . nave given their testlnjpny. The hearing was held in the office of Traffic Manager K. B. Miller of the Harrlman lines In Oregon. Others pres ent t besides .those mentioned above, were I. Lane, merchant of Portland, and J. It waa Intimated by the Southern Ore gon representative that Portland Jobbers were being ' protected m the territory south of Portland, but Mr, Miller obi Jected to this and v furthermore " . ex pressed it as his opinion that Albany, for instance, la not entitled to terminal rates. Albany was particularly men tioned because that 'name was brought Into comparison with Mary svllie,. CaL, which has been granted .terminal rates.
