V, THE OREGON,. DAILY JOURNAlX PORTLAND- MONDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 21, 1010. in Klamkt outlln hl r n p M 1 E Political Gathering at Klamath Fails to -Arouse Republi cans' Enthusiasm. (Speclil DUpatch to Th Journal.) Merrill, Or., Feb. M.q. T. Oliver, chairman of the Republican county committee of Klamath county, wia In Merrill explaining his plan for the re organization of the Republican party to select a county ticket for the coming campaign without running amuck of the direct primary law. Oliver Bent cir cular letter lnvltatjone to Hepubllcanr to meet in Klamkth Falls today," when he will outline his plan. . The plan consists- of the formation of Republican clubs In the various precincts, each of these local clubs sending a representa tlve to a county conference of club dele gates, when "recommendations" will be In order for the candidates to be voted on at the direct primaries. Republicans In Merrill are reluctant to embrace this somewhat peculiar mode of "bootlegging" around the direct pri mary law, and distrust the premature -political gatheJjrg as being Intended In some way to place candidates in the field who are opposed to the removal of the court house. It la not known that this is the ob ject sought, but the Merrill end. of the county wants representation on the board of county commissioners, and the people here wish to choose a man who favors the new court house sits. Thieves Fall Oat; One Die. (Uoltod Prone IXHwd Wire.) Seattle, Feb. 21. That an unknown man, murdered In a. room in a cheap hotel here Saturday night came to his death In a quarrel over the division of spoils between "gang of graftcrg," Is the assertion of the police today. The man, about 30 years old,' was found with fou bullets In his head, three from a 38' caliber gun and one from a 12. Qhortly after shots were heard late Saturday night, one of the two men who had engaged the room . ran down the stairs, colliding with a chambermal l. The proprietor saw him dash through the door. That he was wounded was plain, as he left a trail of blood on the stairs. Qrcgonffjfc Home Office s CORBETT BtrruDuro, Cor. ruth u( Morrison Its. rosTuirs, oaaaow. THE POUCTHOXiDEStf' COMPACT A. L. Rothchlld, the builder of the seven story struc ture recently erected there, and Mrs. McCormlck, whn owns a BO by 100 foot lot on the south side of Alder street between Third and Fourth. The Trimble property was recently taken under a 60 year lease by the Union Bank & Trust company and will be Improved within the next 18 months with a 12 story steel and concrete building. By holding to their business property 1909 tariff law was the best. ever passed In this country has thrown' the Repub lican fat Into the fire again. It was announced that the speech was to be the signal for reuniting the party. In stead, It stirred anew the -fires of re volt, and every day now come to this city news of most Intense indignation against the president's second endorse ment of the tariff bill. Perhaps as good evidence as any of the delight of the New England highly protected Interests over the tariff bill speech of Mr. Taft Is that Pnator Hale of Maine, second to Aldrlch In command of the senate, has had the president's remarks printed in the Congressional Record, and that the national Republi can congrgMSlonal committee will send out thlr speech as a campaign document this year. The committee In controlled by the high tariff men. Cannon's Bpeeoh. The committee Is sending out this speech together with the president's Winona speech and Mr. Cunnon'H Kan sas City speech. In which the speaker "read out of the party" all Insurgents. It Is obvious that the leaders of the f Republican party, such Aldrloh, Can non, Payne and even the president. In no sense realize the extent of the popu lar Tevolt that has spread over the country. One of them the other day said that he "thought It no more ser ious than an epidemics of influenza." And Inasmuch as the president is surrounded by only such advisers as the Aldrlch, Cannon, Hale, Wlckersham type. It Is obvious that he,, too, dis credits the popular revolt and doesn't understand the present temper Of the masses. Semoorats Slow, Too. On the other hand, those who look beneath the surface, see among most of the Democratic leaders the same fail ure to discern actual conditions. 8ome such as Bryan, Champ Clark, Con gressman Rnlney, Congressman James, and Oregon's own senator, Oeorgo Chamberlain appraise at full value this uprising. But most of them see no farther than a possible party victory In the 1910 congressional elections, and are to he depended on for no more genuine relief tlmn the present ruling Republican leaders. The conviction Is deepening In Wash ington that the 1910 elections offer hope for the people only ns the voters forget party claims and support such candidates as In their personalities rep resent dependable progressive tenden cies. Combine for Success. The word Is going oyt In nil directions that In all congressional districts there should he a coalition between prog ressive Democrats and progressive Re publicans, and In many locnlltles this Idea Is being openly advocated. In extensive conversation, for In stance, with progressive 'Democrats here, I find them anxious that progres sive Democrats in Washington state support Mile Poindexter of Spokane, now congressman and a candidate for the senate to succeed Piles. The keenness of the oldtlme party loyalty is lessened to a degree. This year, if Wsshlngton city is Informed of the country's temper, It will be men, measures and progress, rather than party slogans, partisanship and plat forms, which will Interest the voters. SO About Plain Carpeting The tendency toward simple effects in floor coverings is shown in the increased demand for plain carpets and solid colors. As a back ground for oriental or fine domestic rugs, nothing equals the soft shades of green na ture's own background. Tan comes next in popularity, and the deeper shades of brown lend an increased richness to the arts and crafts decorative scheme. 'Simple band and Greek borders make beautiful rug effects for large rooms at a modest cost. For store and office use, the plain fabrics are splendidly adapted and many fine showrooms in Port land have used them with great success. Ask to see them.
