Currin, Th indications are that turkeys will sell at SO and J 5 cents a pound In the retalt markets' during Christmas week.. A careful canvass of .the situation by The Journal shows that the shipments to this market from various northwest centers will not equal those of Thanks giving and that this year's supply will be considerably under a year ago. Ida ho, which usually ships huge supplies to the Portland market. -will not ship any for Christmas and the same is true of some Willamette valley points, which are usually libera shippers. Higher prices have been paid for tur keys by country shippers than ever be-1 fore and, therefore, there is little indi cation of any break in the market Those who expect t6 get turkeys should order, early, according to sellers, be cause not tiily will they get the choicest birds, but at the close of the coming week ther may be a shortage and. some may nave to eat crow or chicken. Kastern Turkeys Coming. . Some eastern cold storage turkey t will be put on the local market for the Christmas trade, but th prices will be so high that consumers are not .likely to find relief in these birds. The talk of a big carry-over stock held by Puget sound merchant seems to have been I made of whole cloth in an effort to I beat down the price paid to shippers. This is exactly what" happened previous to Thanksgiving. Seattle will buy more turkeys In Portland than a month ago and, according to - advices ' from there, that city would prefer to purchase them In front street than to go out into the country. .The extra expense of solicit ing country . shipments in competition with Portland and San Francisco is said to have cost the Puget sound commis sion men more money than they re ceived for. their birds. - . ; All told, turkey shipments to this city, will not be more than 20,000 birds ana or tnis amount iddui ij.dvu nirasi will com from this vicinity and the rest from outside points. Some of these I birds will be sold to Puget Bound, and, therefore, Portland will not have pos sibly more than 12,000 birds for her I own use and the ordinary Christmas shipments to this city are around 30, 000 birds.; With an Increasing popular tlon the shortage is expected to be heavy. - Oakland Tnrkey Shipment. (Special DtapatcA to Tun Journal. : Oakland, Or., Iec. 18. Turkey, ship ments from Oakland will be 3900. birds. approximating; 42,000 - pounds, , 20,000 J pounds will go to San Francisco, the balance to Portland. The prie being paid the growers Is 23 to 24 cents pound for fancy stock. Shipments from I here for Christmas last year were 26,- 000 pounds, arid, the price was 22 cents. Total shipments last year were 101,000 pounds and the average price UH cents.: Total shipments this year were 96,000 pounds with the average price 23 cents a pound. , . . - ; . i , - 1 1 j 'A , r massive:-, Solid oak Rocker, SpgnNh Chase leather seat and back, .exactly like illustration. Prices will be higher for, retail con suraers In thhi city , over Thanksgiving prices by at least two cents, if not more. Twenty-five cents was , the prevailing prices for turkeys on Thanksgiving day, while dealers say consumers will have to pay from 27 to 2 cents lor tneir Christmas turkeys.
